I’m drowning!

My room is finished.

The move is finished. My daughter and granddaughter are now at home with us. I’m tip toeing around a sea of boxes and baby toys. Today, I experienced getting ready for work while getting a toddler ready to go. It’s been a long time since I had to do that. I could have gone a lifetime without experiencing it again!

I’m soooo glad she’s a cheerful little critter when she wakes up!

I actually managed to get some laundry done. I was so excited. LOL, pretty sad, isn’t it? With our lives up in the air, no routines have been established. I’m trying to find a place that I can write again. I’m currently in an odd and uncomfortable position while writing my post. No way can I finish a book like this!

My computer is practically upside down. I think I’m going to go on the hunt for a desk again. It just has to be small enough to not crowd out the room, but large enough to have my laptop and room for my coffee and notes.

I’d like to get an old cast iron sewing machine bottom and build my own. Maybe I watch too much Flea Market Flip! But since I love to sew, that would combine two of my favorite things! Isn’t this gorgeous? I’d do it with just a bit bigger top so I could add a file cabinet on one side and some type of drawers for all my pens and papers that I jot notes on.

Tomorrow I’ll try a new spot to write in. I have to hide my computer from my granddaughter. Anything that is Grandma’s she thinks is hers! She’s already taken over my Kindle to watch Sesame Street on. In the meantime I’m on a hunt for an old sewing machine.

As always, you can find my books at my Amazon author page!

(#DOS Part Two)

Release Date: March 21, 2017

The second novel in the emotionally compelling trilogy, Degrees of Separation—three lost souls determined to find balance again…

December has vanished. Rejected by her troubled husband, Austin, and pushed, at his insistence, into the arms of his best friend, Cord, she’s uncertain what the future holds. She loves her husband, regardless of his addiction, but she also loves his best friend. At odds with everything she believed to be her traditional reality, she flees the only home she’s ever known.

Heartbroken, Cord does the right thing and confronts his reluctant betrayal of Austin after losing the woman they both love. He takes charge, dragging Austin back from the edge of oblivion, only to find himself plunged deeper into a life of heartache.

On a path to redemption, Austin must not only confront personal truths, but consider the sacrifices necessary to save his marriage and his friendship with Cord.

An unexpected reunion and exposed secrets will either derail or establish their future as one.

WARNING: This book contains subject matter suitable for mature reading audiences. Some content may be offensive to sensitive readers. Degrees of Separation is a MMF ménage trilogy with many emotionally graphic encounters and challenging situations that break the rules of traditional romance.

Excerpt:

The second she was gone the asshole in the room spoke up. “You’re wasting your time fighting it.”

His fork clattered to his plate. “What the fuck is wrong with you? Stop shoving me at your wife!”

Austin stared past Cord, his face filling with concern.

Shit. Ember stood in the doorway, eyes wide, frozen in place, clutching a white frosted cake heaped with strawberries.

Goddamn Austin and his stupid ideas. “Ember—”

“I…I forgot the knife.” She quickly placed the dishes on the table, her steps faltering, and fled to the kitchen.

“Great,” Cord snapped, bunching up his napkin and tossing it on the table. “Enjoy your fucking cake. I’m out of here.”

Austin opened his big mouth, but Cord was done talking to him. Reasoning with Austin was like trying to discuss physics with a chimp. “Shut it, Austin.”

He detoured to the kitchen, unable to take his rage out on her. “Ember, I didn’t mean—”

“It’s okay.” Her fingers twisted into a dishcloth and then she dashed away a tear.

Fuck. Tears. Not tears! His concern shifted into panic. “It’s not okay. I don’t know what Austin told you—”

“I know what he’s up to. I told him not to do this.”

She fucking knew her husband was messing with him? It didn’t make any sense. “Why is he doing this?”

Now she shrugged. “He’s Austin. Once he gets something in his head…”

Cord rubbed his palm over his face and squeezed. “What does he expect to gain from this? He’s just making an uncomfortable situation worse.”

“He’s trying to fix it. He doesn’t understand, because he wasn’t there. He thinks if we put everything out in the open the guilt will go away. He thinks it’s best to deal with it.”

“Deal with it how?” He wasn’t a fucking puppet Austin could place in whatever position he wanted.

“I don’t know. I barely understand what I’m feeling right now. I can’t pretend to understand what he’s going through. Or you, for that matter.”

All thoughts of her husband vanished as he focused on the ‘f’ word, for his sins. “What are you feeling?”

Her face tightened and her hand pressed into her chest, her eyes betraying her show of bravado. “Here. It hurts. I don’t know how to make it stop, Cord.”

“Hurts how?” He took a slow step closer, keeping his voice low.

Eyes pleading, she looked up at him, her mouth tight with worry. “When I’m near you, my heart beats so fast I’m afraid it’ll explode. But I know I can’t… I can’t express what’s inside of me. Then this unbearable ache takes hold. It just…hurts.”

One night he doesn’t remember – One night she’ll never forget!

Blurb:

Lee Santiago went from one mistake to the next. When a friend dies, exposing his mortality all too well Lee’s family steps in to force him to make something of himself. He can’t be a party boy all his life and if he wants to sign his life away, it will be on the dotted line. He doesn’t even have time to say goodbye. Anyway it was only a drunken one night stand.

Isabelle was always the good girl. Until that night. When the man she’d always worshiped finally noticed her. She couldn’t say no. She’s heartsick to find out he doesn’t remember it. Isabelle’s life crashes around her when the results are in. The truth comes out and she has nowhere to turn. She looks for Lee, but he’s gone.

Will he be man enough to step up and face the consequences when he learns the truth?

Excerpt (G):

“Lenny, my man. Alejandro loaned me his car and I wanted to hit Dead Man’s Curve. You up for some fun today? Call me back, dude.”

Closing his phone he stared at it. He willed his phone to ring. Len never left him hanging. They’d been tight for as long as he could remember. A sick feeling twisted in his stomach. He had to know the truth. He dialed the number that they’d only used in emergencies.

It rang and rang. Not good. Lee was getting ready to hang up when it was answered.

“Hola.”

He’d never heard her like that, voice deep and raw.

“Mrs. R. It’s Lee. Can I talk to Len?”

She burst out crying, deep sobs that tore from her gut.

“Mrs. Rodriguez. What’s the matter?”

“Who is this? What did you say?” The phone had changed hands. Mr. Rodriguez answered, his voice hoarse.

“Mr. R. It’s Lee Santiago. I just asked to talk to Lenny. He didn’t answer his phone. I drove by the house earlier.” Lee could hear the tremble in his own voice. “The police were there. Is Lenny okay?”

Lenny was his best bro. He had to be okay. Lee would be lost without him.

“Oh God, Lee.” Lee could hear the heaviness in his voice. “Lenny’s dead. We came home early and found him on the couch. We thought he was asleep.”

Lee squeezed his phone. It couldn’t be true.

“No. He was fine last night. Laughing and joking.”

“The police think it was a drug overdose.”

Lee was silent, heart aching and gut churning.

“Lee, did you hear me?”

“Yes.”

“Lenny didn’t do drugs. He didn’t do drugs, right Lee?”

Lee couldn’t answer. Lenny had started running with a harder crowd lately. His throat felt raw. How could he respond? He didn’t really know for sure.

“Answer me, Lee.”

“Mr. R.” Lee swallowed. “I don’t know. Some of the people he knew…” He drew in a deep breath. “Some of the people he knew weren’t so good.”

The line was silent. He could hear Mr. R’s breathing and Mrs. Rodriguez crying in the background. He leaned his head on the steering wheel. A tremor shook his body. He just knew what was coming.

“Will you tell the police what you know, Lee? Please. Lenny was your best friend.”

His gut clenched. He knew it. What could he say? No? Yes? Lenny was his best friend. Sometimes his only friend. If he told what he suspected, he might as well pick out his gravesite. Hell, his mom already had it. He’d be planted next to Papa, pushing up the roses.

“I don’t know.” He drew in a ragged breath and swallowed. “Maybe.”

“What went on last night, Lee? Was there a party here? The place is trashed.”

Lee could hear him crying. A hopeless sound that twisted his heart. Mr. R had stepped in when Lee’s dad had died years ago, taking him under his wing. How could he say no?

“Yeah, there was a party. I was on my way over to help Lenny clean up when I saw the cops.”

“Why didn’t you come over?”

Lee swallowed and leaned his head back against the seat.

“I didn’t want to hear what you just told me.”

“The police will want to question you. They need to find out what went on last night.”

Lee swallowed and nodded. He squeezed his eyes shut. The damp tracks on his cheeks were drying in the heat leaving his skin tight.

Excerpt (R):

“I’ve never seen you at a party before. I thought you were a good little girl.” His teasing voice sent thrills throughout her body.

“Today’s my birthday.” Isabelle snuggled closer to him. His body seemed to surround hers.

“So, does that make you legal today?”

Isabelle nodded vigorously then groaned. Her head swam from the movement. Maybe, just maybe she’d had a bit much to drink. Lee would take care of her though. He’d promised.

“But not legal for drinking yet.”

Isabelle pouted then sniffed.

“So what? Most of the people here aren’t twenty-one.”

“Doesn’t make it right.”

Isabelle craned her head around to look at him. Surprised at the hard note in his voice.

“But you’ve been drinking since you were in high school.”

“Again, doesn’t make it right. So, you decided to cut loose now that you’re an adult?”

The small smirk at the side of his mouth fascinated her. Somehow the tip of her finger made its way there. His lips were strong but soft, warm against the softness of her finger. The scruff around his mouth prickled her finger as he rubbed his face against it.

“Don’t play with fire, little girl.” He nipped the tip of her finger as he winked at her, sending a zing through her body.

Isabelle giggled. Normally she thought herself out of Lee’s league, but tonight that didn’t bother her in the least. She’d had too many jello shots to care. Snuggled in his arms, his hands on her affected her more than any bit of alcohol could. Combining them gave her a warm glow.

Isabelle wiggled, the trail of his fingertips tickling her neck and circling her ear. She could feel her nipples tightening, glad for her push up bra. It made her boobs look fabulous, but was thick enough to hide her body’s reaction.

Lee chuckled in her ear, sending warmth pooling low in her belly. Isabelle caught her breath as he trailed his finger down her breast unerringly circling her nipple.

“Cat got your tongue, little girl?”

His warm breath in her ear, followed by a flick of his tongue had her gasping. She shifted, wiggling, trying to relieve the ache building in her. Lee pulled her closer, positioning her across one leg. One hand held her tightly by the hip. The other skimmed the top of her camisole dipping in to tease her nipple.

Isabelle gasped at the sensation. “Lee.” She didn’t know if she was encouraging or warning him away.

He chuckled, stroking her nipple until it stood out, obvious to anyone that bothered to look. He lowered his head, bending Isabelle over his arm as he nibbled her through her shirt. With a tug he pulled it aside exposing her breast before quickly sucking it into his mouth.

“Ah.” Isabelle arched offering herself to the warm suction of his mouth. She caught her breath, liquid heat pooling between her legs with each pull. Her toes curled. The noise of the party disappearing, all her senses focused on the sensations swirling in her body.

“Beautiful.” His voice muffled as he nursed.

The debut novel of a masterfully emotional, high stakes trilogy that will have readers forfeiting tradition to gamble with love…

December and Austin have a traditional, storybook marriage complete with defined roles. Married young, they’ve shared nearly a decade of passion and love. December’s submissive nature is perfectly suited for her husband’s authoritative, yet adoring personality and he seamlessly holds the indisputable role of head of the household.

But Austin harbors secrets, and the pressure of losing his job makes those festering skeletons impossible to ignore.

Turning to alcohol instead of his wife, Austin finally drives December into the arms of their closest friend, Cord, despite her intense loyalty. Cord has loved December since the day they met. His moral compass is challenged and lines are blurred when Austin steps aside and insists Cord take his place.

Forfeiting all, Austin must face a harsh truth. Take control of his life, or forever lose the woman he loves.

WARNING: This book contains subject matter suitable for mature reading audiences. Some content may be offensive to sensitive readers. Degrees of Separation is a ménage trilogy with many emotionally graphic encounters and challenging situations that break the rules of traditional romance.

Excerpt:

The glass shattered as he kicked the mirror. “Tell me another! What else do I do wrong?”

December held the folded laundry protectively to her chest and tried to remain calm in the face of this particular storm. “Stop screaming at me.”

He stomped across the room and she hustled backward. “I told you not to accept any more money from him!”

She glanced at his splinted hand. Two knuckles had cost a lot of money to fix, especially when they could only afford mediocre medical insurance with astronomical deductibles. “What was I supposed to do, Austin? You need your hands. No one told you to punch that wall.”

And now he looked ready to punch another one. He mumbled something she couldn’t make out.

“What?”

“We could have paid the bill later.”

“And let it accumulate interest?” It was hard enough asking Cord for another loan on top of the one they already had, not to mention hiding the reason they needed the money, which she’d done out of respect for Austin’s privacy. She shouldn’t have to justify yet another solution to a problem he brought on himself. “We’re already in a hole.”

“Then stop borrowing money!”

“If you don’t want to lose our home, we have to. Why don’t you get that? My paycheck isn’t enough to afford more than our mortgage and groceries. We have other expenses. You need a phone in case someone calls about a job. You need a car to get to that job. You need insurance to drive that car. And you need functional hands to work.”

“Well, that ain’t happening now!”

She angrily stuffed the laundry into the drawer and crouched down to clean up the broken shards of glass. God only knew how long it would take to replace the mirror.

“Leave it,” he snapped.

“I’m not going to leave shattered pieces of glass all over the bedroom floor.”

Here they were again, him drunk and her astounded that he’d broken yet another promise. Such a fast return to hell only two weeks after their reconnection. No job and he was drinking again. Still.

“I said leave it, before you cut yourself.”

As if his words were the catalyst, she hissed as a thin shard sliced into the pad of her thumb.

“God damn it, Ember! I fucking told you to leave it alone.”

Staring down at the swelling line of blood collecting on her finger, she fell back onto her ass, stunned. Yet again, it all came down to her screwing up, the outlet his blame needed to keep his own accountability away.

Defining moments should be accompanied by a sound like thunder clapping loud enough to rock a person’s world. But in actuality, silence denoted such moments, as the pivotal point settled with utter clarity in the mind.

She placed the collection of glass back on the floor and stood, cupping her hand so blood didn’t drip on the carpet.

“Is it bad?” he asked, as she made her way to the bathroom.

Too late for concern, Austin. Hollow and meaningless.

Beast Betrayed ~ L.L. Brooks ~ Black Mesa Book 4

Coming in February the Black Mesa Saga continues with number four, Beast Betrayed.

black-mesa-4blurb:

Daniel thought Brand was joking when he talked of vampires, until one, burning up from the sun, ran into the barn. Raymond begged for help to save a child, saying Isaac, a previous acquaintance of Brand’s, had given his name. When Brand was taken, Daniel didn’t know why or which of the two had betrayed them. Alone, he didn’t know who to trust, only that he had to save his mate, but could he? Could he survive losing Brand if he failed? Not willing to take the chance, he called on friends and even foes for help. Wolves against vampires. Who will win?

excerpt:

Daniel could see what was happening and knew there was no way he could get there in time. His cougar knew as well, clawing and growling to be free. Running and stripping, Daniel gave in to the pain of shifting. The cat kicked off the pants around its back feet, flipping off the shoes. The socks slid with the leaps of the mighty cat, gone in a few feet. Too late and too far to go. He couldn’t reach the ATVs racing out of the woods, their spotlights stabbing through the dark. Each rider aimed and shot. Seeing those rifles come out, he thought his heart would stop, convinced Brand was dead. He couldn’t breathe again until that last faint message came from Brand.

“Tranquilizer… I’m…”

Each of the four men caught up a corner of the net, and they were gone, dragging Brand in his wolf behind them.

Screaming his rage, Daniel followed the sound. Catapulting over one abandoned ATV, he caught one man, throwing him by the neck to go after another. The door to the van slammed shut, the men out of his reach, the van tires throwing gravel and dirt at him, blinding him, choking him, and still Daniel raced after them.

Daniel caught his breathe with a sob. There was no way he could out run that van. They were gone. Brand was gone, and as long as they kept him sedated, there was no way Daniel could contact him.
