Excerpt

Robbie sat at the edge of his bed, staring at his bedroom door. His curtains were closed and his windows were locked, even though a shiny sun hung in the sky outside, illuminating everything in sight. It was another beautiful day, yet he couldn’t bring himself to go out and enjoy it. As much as he tried, he couldn’t face the fact that Vince was out there and wanted him dead.

Taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes, going through the last few days in his mind. Everyone had been there for him, comforting him and making him feel special and most importantly, loved. They all had been so nice by putting up with his neurotic behavior. But for how much longer? He wanted to be the guy he was before learning the truth about his past. He wanted to feel safe again. He wanted to feel free. The only two places that he felt safe and free were at home and at school. Everywhere else, he felt unprotected and extremely vulnerable. He needed to be strong though. If John was able to fight Matthew Ward twice, he definitely had what it takes to fight Vince at least once.

The knob on his door turned slightly. His blood froze. Who was that and what did he want? Clearly, it wasn’t Nick or John since they were out shopping for Thanksgiving, and Nicky decided to spend some quality time with Abby at her house. The door then crept open, making Robbie’s breathing come to a sudden stop. His head spun while his heart violently pounded. Who was it? Was that Vince? Was this it? Was he about to die?

Character Interview for SATIN DOLL, a Jana Lane mystery, by Joe Cosentino, published by The Wild Rose Press

SatinDollcoverIntroduce yourself.  What book are you from? Are you the hero, heroine, villain?Porcelaincover

Hello, I’m Jana Lane from Joe Cosentino’s Jana Lane mysteries. I just asked Joe and he said I am definitely the heroine.

How did you come to your author’s attention?

Joe Cosentino acted on stage, film, and television opposite stars like Nathan Lane, Rosie O’Donnell, Holland Taylor, Bruce Willis, Charles Keating, and Jason Robards. He uses his insider knowledge of movie-making to craft fast-paced, page-turning, mystery romance novels with exciting plot twists and turns and white knuckle shocking endings. As a child Joe loved child stars like Shirley Temple, Hayley Mills, and Patty Duke, seeing their movies over and over. So he created me as the biggest child star in America until I was attacked on the studio lot at eighteen years old. You can read all about how twenty years later I uncovered my attacker, and found out secrets about everyone I loved, in PAPER DOLL, a Jana Lane mystery. I’m proud to say the reviews were amazing. Here’s an example:

“Mr. Cosentino has produced a masterpiece of mystery (Paper Doll)” “The story gripped me from the start and there were enough twists and turns, with a bit of romance thrown in for good measure, to keep hold of me until the end of the book.” “Great book, can’t wait for book 2.” Readers’ Favorite

As another Academy Award winning actress once said, They liked me. They really liked me.

Did you give your author a hard time when he was writing your story?

I would never give Joe a hard time. He’s such a nice guy. Though I do get tired of living in his head. I’m thrilled when he lets me out for a new book, and I’m thrilled to report there are more Jana Lane mysteries to come! Since the series takes place in the 1980’s, Joe includes a great deal of history, music, and fashion from the era like Flashdance, “Maniac,” layered hair, parachute pants, shoulder pads, lace gloves, Karen Carpenter’s death, and the still new AIDS epidemic and the devastation it caused when ignored by our political representatives. I help him out with the fashion.

What do you do for a living?

Now in my forties I am making a comeback—personally and professionally. In PORCELAIN DOLL (The Wild Rose Press) I starred in a thriller, His Obsession, which was shot at my mansion in picturesque Hudson Valley, New York. In the process of filming, I used various things I learned as a child star to uncover who was being murdered on the set and why. And I was nominated for an Academy Award! Also, my heart was set aflutter by my gorgeous co-star, America’s heartthrob Jason Apollo. The other suspects included my James Dean type young co-star, my older John Wayne type co-star, my children’s Eve Harrington type nanny, the film’s gossipy makeup and hair artist, a local reverend trying to stop the film’s production for “moral reasons,” and Jason’s agent. Again I’m excited to report the reviews were terrific, for example:

“Murder, mystery, and suspense are high inside of this brilliant masterpiece by Joe Cosentino.” “Every page fills the readers with intrigue.” “Edge of your seat mystery that lures readers instantly.” “Once you read it, you can’t put it down.” Danielle Urban Universal Creativity Inc.

Now in SATIN DOLL (The Wild Rose Press) my family and I head to Washington, DC, where I play a US senator in a new film, and become embroiled in murder and corruption at the senate chamber. I also embark on a flirtation with Chris Bruno, the ex-football player detective. Also, my husband goes through a personal crisis. There are some familiar faces like my old world, loyal, and hysterically funny agent, Simon Huckby, who produces the AIDS benefit that I host at the Ford Theatre. And there are my best friend and lawyer, Congressman Jackson Mitchell and his partner Adam, who host my family at their rustic home on a lake. I meet some new faces too like Senator Maxmillion, the Republican majority leader of the Senate, and Benjamin Topower, Maxmillion’s wealthy super pack contributor. And there is Senator Cassie Castle, the Democrat senator touted to run for Vice President. Cassie is a smart, strong woman who is deeply involved in protecting the environment, women’s rights, gay rights, education, and creating jobs, like her father before her. She is also quite charismatic. So in some ways she’s very much like Hillary Clinton. In many ways she is different. You see Cassie is dating the Republican majority leader of the Senate.

Who is the love of your life?

My husband Brian picked up the pieces and put me back together after I left the business twenty years ago. He has been my rock ever since, and I adore him. Brian’s an architect and the father of my three adorable boys. I may have flirtations in each of the books, but ultimately I’m a one-man woman and that man is Brian Otley.

What was the first thing you noticed about him?

Brian has chestnut-colored hair, hazel eyes, a little boy smile, and a quite muscular physique. He also has an incredible sense of humor, and he is quite patient with my moviemaking and sleuthing.

What’s your greatest fear?

As a child star I worked hard learning how to do things like steer a motorboat, swim for hours at a time, and ride my horse Ginger. Now in my forties in each book I reconnect with that girl who could outsmart the villains, perform acts of bravery, and save those she loved from every evil fate as I turn the tables on the murderer in the final reel.

What’s your motto in life?

There’s a child star in each of us that needs to be nurtured and protected. We are all special, worthwhile, and deserving of love and happiness.

How do the other characters in your book view you?

Brian sees me as a do-gooder. My best friend Jackson would say I’m a pushover for a good cause since I have hosted so many benefits for AIDS research. My agent Simon would say I’m his baby girl—who he discovered. Cassie Castle would tell you she’s proud of women like me, which makes me incredibly humble. Senator Maxmillion would proclaim me a bleeding heart liberal.

What do you think readers will find interesting about you?

As a movie star I live an amazing life surrounded by the glamorous world of show business, but I also value my time at home with my husband and my children. The detectives with whom I’ve come into contact told me I have the best mind in crime solving. I blushed.

What is the kinkiest thing you’ve ever done?

In each book I have a flirtation with an enticing and gorgeous male co-star or detective, but I always come home to Brian with no guilt on my conscience.

Will we be seeing you in future books?

Releasing late May is CHINA DOLL (The Wild Rose Press), where I head to New York City to star in a Broadway play, enchanted by my gorgeous co-star Peter Stevens, and faced with murder on stage and off. With my help, Joe is finishing the next book now, RAGDOLL, where I star in a television mystery series and once again life imitates art on the set.

What makes you happy?

Standing up for those unable to stand up for themselves, bringing a murderer to justice, and coming home to the strong arms of my husband and sweet kisses from my children.

What makes you mad?

I’ve come across a few so called religious leaders, politicians, and media personalities who use their wealth, power, media chops, and affiliations to demean others and try to take away their rights. So I stand up to them and protect the people they are persecuting.

Thank you for visiting with us Jana! Now let’s check out Satin Doll.

SATIN DOLL Excerpts:

1983.

Jana Lane, America’s most famous ex-child star, ran down a dark hallway in the north wing of the Capitol, causing the row of senators’ office to become a blur of brown. Sweat soaked through her beige business suit as her heart pounded in her ears. She turned a corner and Jana’s heels skidded to a halt on the marble floor as she screamed at the sight of—

After a gasp, Jana looked up at her husband’s handsome face. Thank God it was just a dream.

Brian leaned his muscular back on the gold circular headboard under the ruby-red satin canopy bedcover. “It must have been one heck of a nightmare.”

Jana noticed her beige satin nightgown was soaking wet. She pushed off the silver satin sheets. After walking past the circular fireplace without looking into the floor-length oval mirror, she headed into her walk-in closet and changed into a pink silk replacement.

“Care to tell your husband about it?”

She sat at her pink crushed velvet trimmed vanity, looked in the mirror, and brushed her long strawberry-blonde hair. “I don’t want to tell you.”

“Why not?”

“I know what you’ll say.”

“Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty?”

Jana placed the gold brush back on the vanity. “I was being chased by someone at the Capitol.”

“The Capitol Theatre?”

“No, the Capitol…in Washington, DC.”

Brain ran a strong hand through his thick, chestnut hair, and said like a television announcer, “Courtesy of Jana Lane’s next film, Madam Senator.”

Jana felt goosebumps as she looked over at the dias for the presiding officer—a rotating senator elected by the majority/Republican party. Her eyes spanned the one hundred desks in a semicircle, where senators sat by order of seniority with the majority leader (Josiah Maxmillion noticeably absent) and minority leader (Ben Stevens present) sitting front and center on each side.

The meeting resumed. Jana stood in awe and listened as senators took to the floor, yielding and accepting time to and from one another, making their case for or against the vast expense of taxpayers’ dollars.

After ten minutes had gone by, Jana realized she had left her notepad in Cassie’s office. Wanting to write copious notes about her meeting with Max and about the senate debate, Jana hurried through hallways and around corridors. Again flashbacks from her nightmare rendered her unable to move, but she commanded her legs to obey and miraculously found her way back.

Upon entering Cassie’s office, Jana noticed Cassie’s secretary and Lenore were not at their desks. Probably on their lunch breaks. Since Cassie’s office door was open, Jana peeked her head inside and gasped at the sight of Tamaya Stormcloud, lying motionless on the Persian rug, surrounded by a pool of blood.

Excerpt

She grabs the bottle and drinks rapidly. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her drink so quickly.

“Don’t eat the bottle!” I joke, hoping to put a smile on her face. She thanks me with a small smile. Suddenly the door opens, and our moment of joyful peace is broken. Lucas walks in. He comes over and grabs my hand.

“You will pay for that, damn girl!” He threatens as he hauls me off my bed.

“What did I do?” I shout at him, confused, and draw back.

“You—trying to be so nice…helping your poor beat up friend who is not supposed to have water!” He’s yelling, taking the blanket and dragging me to the door.

“Leave her alone!” Kate screams at him, jumps up to stop him. The Varkin turns around and hits her so hard she falls to the floor. Holding my hand tightly, he walks me to the elevator. As we walk in, he presses the SS button. I barely get right in before the elevator door closes, almost pinching my leg. He pushes me against the opposite wall.

“Where are you taking me?” I demand, but I’m panicking—I’m in trouble.

“Relax,” Lucas puts his cold arms around my waist. “You might still have a chance to change things…”

He pulls me close to him. I feel his ice cold lips on my neck. I close my eyes, disgusted as never before. He pushes me to the wall with his body and rips my shirt from my back.

He’s going to beat me. I’m not going to make it easy.

I shove him away. He picks me up, throws me against the wall. He slaps my face, his nails scratch my cheek.

“Stupid, damn Anlight! You will get it good this time! I promise!”

His tone brings chills, all the way down to my legs.

When the elevator stops on the SS floor, he drags me down the hallway, the blanket in his hand. My ripped shirt is left lying in the elevator. All I have on is a dirty old black brassiere that’s seen better days. He looks back, and catches a glimpse of my stomach. A couple of days ago I’d been given a deep scratch, and he’s just noticed the scratch has gone.

“What happened to your scratch? It could not possibly heal so fast!”

Lucas takes me to the room where Victorius beats me if I don’t do what they tell me. We walk in and there are about twelve other Varkins in groups. Red lights and smoke make the place into a horror scene.

“She needs punishment like never before!” he screams, tossing me like a grubby rag to the middle of the room. All the Varkins turn and look. Glowing eyes look at me—without a shirt—as I try to break my landing.

“What did she do, my dear friend?” Victorius asks. He’s calm, still sitting in his chair.

“Her room-mate was not allowed to drink,” the Varkin replies. “But this one hid water and gave it to her friend. She stole this blanket, knowing she is not allowed to have one.”

Victorius’ face is serious as he listens closely. I get up, stand right in front of him. He stands, walks down to me, around me. I feel my pulse beating with each step he takes. My body tenses—I expect him to hit me any moment. I’ve been hoping I’d get used to this torture eventually, but every new punishment brings new terror and fear.

“Well, well…” Victorius stops in front of me. “Seems like I see your pretty face here more than other Anlights. We do not have many left…but I do remember you well…” He smiles. “Let me first inform you, this Varkin here is my ‘right hand’. The one I trust the most. And now he is telling me terrible things about you. Hmm…” he looks in my eyes, “…should I believe his tales?”

I know if I tell him the truth, no one will believe me for a minute. And it would make my situation even worse. I don’t think he’ll even let me open my mouth.

“Believe what you like.” I keep looking downwards, and the other Varkins whisper around us. They didn’t expect my careless answer. They’re probably trying to figure out why I won’t try protecting myself by finding excuses.

“Lucas!” he shouts and his right hand comes to him.

“Yes, my majesty.”

“What do you think we need to…do…with her, considering everything she has done?”

“Victorius, there is something interesting you might want to know about her…” Lucas said.

“What?”

Lucas comes up to me and points at my stomach. I don’t know how to deal with this. I’m shaking as I try to cover the healed scratch with my hands.

“Two days ago she had a long cut on her stomach. It was bleeding. Now it is not there anymore. It is healed. There is something going on with her.” Lucas pulls my hands away.

“It’s not true,” I burst out. “The cut was not too deep, and it was more than two days—” Victorius slaps me before I can finish talking.

“I have noticed things like that as well, but I thought it was just my mind playing tricks with me,” Victorius talks slowly, calmly, as he turns my face back toward him with his cold hand. “Now here is evidence.” He’s smiling, which isn’t necessarily a good sign.

“We need to take her blood, do tests on her,” Lucas suggests.

“My friend,” Victorius looks at him, “tests have killed almost all my Anlights. I cannot afford to lose any more of them. But we will surely take her blood and see why she is different.” Victorius comes to my side and puts his arm around my shoulders.

“But there is one test I can do right now…”

Excerpt

Annabel stopped for a moment and closed her eyes, knowing exactly the owner of the voice. She slowly turned around, as did the others.

“Already leaving?” Jonathan said walking up closer to her. “Leaving without your boyfriend?” He smiled at her.

“Don’t start, Jonathan,” Annabel said seriously.

“What’s there to start?” he replied still looking at her. “Don’t make me, and I won’t start anything.”

“I’m tired and I’m going back to the hotel.”

“Come with me, I’ll take you back to your hotel.” Jonathan reached for Annabel’s hand and pulled it closer to him.

“Don’t worry about it,” she refused.

Jonathan suddenly looked at Dexter who seemed to be calm, perhaps because fighting did not scare him. He was confident he could protect Annabel and himself.

“Why don’t you steal somebody else’s girl?”

“I didn’t steal, you lost.” Dexter replied, calmly standing right by Annabel.

“I didn’t lose anything,” Jonathan growled and moved toward Dexter. He punched him in his face. Dexter quickly reacted and hit him so hard Jonathan fell backwards to the ground. Dexter’s punch would impress even a big-time fighter. He was one of the best and strongest fighters Maximus had trained. Jonathan quickly got up and was about to continue fighting when the Old Opera House guards rushed over.

“What’s going on here?” one of the tall guards asked. “Who do we need to ban from next year’s ceremony?”

Jonathan looked at Annabel.

“Nobody, I’m leaving.” he hissed, wiping his bleeding lip and walking back inside the Old Opera House.

Annabel, Dexter, his friends, Hannah and Rick moved on to their cars.

“Your eyebrow’s bleeding,” Annabel noticed, looking at him as they walked through the parking lot. “I have an emergency kit in my room.”

Dexter told his friends to go without him and sat in the car with Hannah, Rick and Annabel.

“Are you okay, Dex?” Hannah asked with concern.

“Yeah, like nothing happened.”

“I’m glad it didn’t turn out worse,” Annabel said, looking at Dexter’s eyebrow.

“It’s nothing, but I’m glad too. I told you nothing would happen.”

“It wasn’t your fault, Dex,” Rick said, looking at Annabel in the rear view mirror and nodding. “He was quick to start the fight first, and you finished it. Like it’s supposed to be.”

Annabel knew sooner or later she would still have to talk to Jonathan about his behavior, and the longer she waited, the harder it was going to be.

They pulled up at the hotel and walked inside, taking the elevator to their rooms.

“We’ll see you tomorrow, Annabel” Hannah sang, pulling Rick by his hand toward their room as soon as they exited the elevator.

“Bye, Dex. See you later, Annabel” Rick barely had time to say, waving at them both.

Annabel and Dexter walked to her room with its small living room, kitchen and studio bedroom. In the little kitchen she opened the cabinet where she had earlier noticed an emergency kit.

“Looks like I got blood on my shirt.” Dexter noticed the sleeve on his shirt had red spots and began removing it.

Annabel saw Dexter unbuttoning his shirt and turned her head away. She knew he had a nice muscular body that would drive any woman crazy. He walked around the table and sat on the high round chair. Annabel opened the kit to make sure everything she needed was there. She prepared a peroxide solution with the cotton ball and came to the table, beside Dexter. She put the emergency kit on the table and faced him. Annabel could not help gazing at his body, and she began to feel jumpy. She kept a tight hold on her emotions, as if she was not affected by him. Dexter was staring at her face—so beautiful, innocent and pale. He seemed to be entranced, not taking his eyes from her.

Annabel took small cotton ball and looked at Dexter.

“It might hurt a little,” she whispered reaching up to his eyebrow. Her hands began to tremble slightly, being so close to him. She slowly and carefully wiped the dried blood away. Dexter watched her face, not showing any pain or discomfort. Annabel noticed he was mesmerized, and tried to pay attention to what she was doing. After cleaning his eyebrow, she turned to put everything back. Dexter took her hand and slowly pulled her close. Annabel looked at him and her heart began to race. He gently moved his hands behind her back touching her skin, pulling her even closer. Annabel took a slow breath, feeling butterflies in her stomach.

She placed her hands on his strong shoulders, not expecting to feel his body on fire.

IMG_2179Author Bio:

Originally from the Ukraine, I am still considered a new face to America. Speaking three languages including English, that became just as natural to me as my native Russian.

I grew up in a town on the south of Ukraine doing the same things that other kids my age did. Dreaming, hoping and wishing. Growing up, I spoke absolutely no English and never even saw myself somewhere abroad. Nevertheless writing a novel in another language!

I went to the local school that brought mostly negative experience in my life. But it shaped me throughout the years. My college life was much better. I was known to study well and to go out partying as much as it was possible.

In my first year of college I began to work in the marriage agency and met my future husband. We dated and traveled to most of the Europe along with Egypt.

When I finally got my fiancée visa, we both moved to the states, where soon after, got married. In the first few years I did some modeling and acting. Photo-shoots, run-way and photo in the magazine fulfilled my childhood’s dream.

A few years later I became a mother of a wonderful and most handsome little boy. Along with learning and experiencing motherhood, I began to make hand-made jewelry and organic soaps. This hobby turned into my small business and became bigger than I thought it would.

In the last year I discovered: an author lives inside me. Never did I think that I would write an English book and that I would love doing it. But I did! And I loved it!

Annabel, endures a year of such cruelty, kept alive only by way of syringes which, while healing, cause a greater agony. She discovers a secret held by their leader, and decides to help her own kind by escaping–even if it means a final death, preferable to the life she has endured. Her escape succeeds, and she joins her own kind at the other end of the planet. Among her new friends she meets many who help her adjust to their happier life. Will Annabel find romance? Or will another war break her down?

My college life was much more pleasant. I was known to study well and to go out partying as much as it was possible.

Now – owner of bachelor degree in finance/economic and enterprises.
In my first year of college I began to work in the marriage agency and met my future husband. We dated and traveled to most of the Europe along with Egypt.

When I finally got my fiancée visa, we both moved to the states, where soon after we got married. In the first few years I did some modeling and acting. Photo-shoots, run-way and photo in the magazine fulfilled my childhood’s dream.

A few years later I became a mother of a wonderful and most handsome little boy. Along with learning and experiencing motherhood, I began to make hand-made jewelry and organic soaps to occupy my spare time. This hobby turned into my small business and became bigger than I thought it ever would.

In the last year I discovered: an author lives inside me. Never did I think that I would write an English book and that I would love doing it. But I did! And I loved it! I am hoping my readers will enjoy it and will look forward my next books.

“Black Wings” – my debut novel comes from a dream that I saw a few months before I decided to capture it on paper. After long thinking and developing an exciting story, I could not just keep it inside me. I shortly began writing. Within only a couple of months the story was completed. I found my first publisher within the next couple of months and after a few more months of hard work, “sweat and blood” – the book is finally here for you, dear readers, to enjoy!

Empathy ~ Carolyn Wren

Carolyn Wren – Empathy (Emotional Chains Book 1)

Release Date – March 23rd 2015

Carolyn WrenBio

Carolyn Wren is the award winning author of the romantic suspense series, The Protectors.

Having spent her working life as a book-keeper and finance officer for international companies, she discovered a passion for fiction writing in 2009. Assuming it was some sort of mid-life crisis, she kept it a secret for six months. In an impulsive move, she entered The Emerald, a prestigious writing contest for unpublished authors run by the Romance Writers of Australia. Much to her utter shock, she won it. This was followed shortly after by a finalist placing in the unpublished division of the International Daphne Du Maurier Awards for Excellence in Mystery/Suspense.

After braving a submission letter to Secret Cravings Publishing, her debut published work Diplomat’s Daughter (Protectors Book 1) won the RWA ‘Ella’ award for novella of the year.

To date, The Protectors series has received four award nominations, resulting in two trophies.

Carolyn’s other works include a very naughty ghost erotic novella Ghosts of Grace Cottage that she wrote during a stormy winter day.  Her new series, the murder mystery urban fantasy Emotional Chains is her latest writing obsession.

When not in front of the computer, you’ll find Carolyn glued to the TV.  She loves classic 1960s spy dramas, and is a self-confessed sci-fi geek who owns every single Star Trek, Dr Who, and Buffy dvd ever made.

She lives in the hills of Western Australia with a husband she adores, and a varied assortment of native wildlife.

What if you could sense the emotions of everyone around you?

What if you fell in love with someone you’d never even met?

Blurb

Oliver Lord belongs to one of three special families, empaths who feel emotions as a physical sense.  Quiet and reserved, and accustomed to keeping his abilities hidden, Oliver is drawn inexorably to a woman he’s never met.  The woman who made his brother’s last year of life so happy.

When Zoe Daniels, talented sculptor, loses her fiancé before their wedding, she can’t imagine finding love again, until she meets Jasper’s unknown brother, a man so different, yet so achingly familiar to the man she adored. What is Oliver’s secret, and why is he so determined to keep her at arm’s length?

A violent kidnapping and murder forces the empaths from the shadows to seek justice for one of their own.  Oliver turns to Zoe, needing her comfort and love. Can she accept him for who he is?

Oliver and two powerful empathic friends need to track down the kidnappers before they strike again, but how do you solve a murder, when your only clue is emotion?

Excerpts

Zoe sat with her back to the tree as she always did, knees drawn up. Thin cords dangled from her ears, attached to the smart phone at her hip. Her feet tapped out a rhythm to a tune Oliver couldn’t hear. She put down the book in her hands and tilted her head to the dappled sunlight peeking through the branches. A smile lit her face as the beams played like mischievous children on her closed eyelids. The old forest was lush and vibrant, a calm oasis of another age. Jasper had always loved spending time here, lost in the peace and quiet. No doubt he’d brought Zoe here. That she’d feel close to him in this isolated place they’d shared was understandable.

Oliver shut his eyes and reached out to read her. If he looked deep inside, he could find the essence of the brother he missed so much. He tried not to. The first time it had seemed an intrusion, but sometimes he couldn’t help himself. She was warmth and goodness. Her calm was a soothing balm to his nerves and a link to a beloved lost sibling. He indulged himself and took a tiny moment. She’ll never know.

“Why don’t you come out from behind that tree?”

Oliver’s eyes flew open at the sound of her voice. He’d not planned on being seen, and normally when he chose that option, he wasn’t. It was a simple, foolproof empathic trick, one he’d been able to do since childhood. Remaining silent and unmoving, he projected a low level of emotion in her direction. Disinterest. Indifference. Boredom. Every gentle empathic nudge was designed to increase her need to walk away and not look back.

She continued to talk as she stood. Brushing leaves from her trousers, she walked toward him with determination in her blue eyes. “If you keep lurking, it just looks suspicious.”

The moment their gazes met, he caught a flare of something. Surprise? Confusion? Oliver regained his composure. “I’m sorry if I scared you. I was enjoying the sunshine. You looked as if you were deep in thought. I didn’t want to disturb your privacy.”

“What about all the other times? Were you concerned about my privacy then, too?”

She’d noticed him before? Oliver’s much vaulted confidence of his own abilities took a distinct dive. “I’m sorry. It’s a pleasant spot, somewhere I enjoy and find calming.” Only because you’re here. “I won’t intrude on your peace any longer.”

“Do I know you?” She tilted her head to one side. The filtered sun caught the blonde strands of her short feathered haircut, making them shine.

“No.”

“Do you know who I am?”

“No.”

“May I ask you another question?”

Oliver frowned. “Of course?”

“Why are you lying to me? And who were you to Jasper?”

Excerpt 2

She sighed and leaned forward. “I’m about to tell you something. I would appreciate it if you’d listen with an open mind, because it’s going to shock you.”

Mike mirrored her position, leaning his elbows on the table. “Very little shocks me these days, Miss Baron.”

“I prefer Meredith, or Merri.”

He inclined his head in acknowledgement. “If you have information on this case, I need to hear it.”

She fiddled with the spoon from her chocolate. The first non-confident move he’d seen her make. “I think Freddy may have been killed because of abilities he had.”

“Abilities?”

“Freddy was empathic. He could feel emotions as a physical sense.”

Mike sagged, fighting a keen sense of disappointment and a growing anger. He thought they were on to something, but no. She was one of those loopy new-age nut jobs—a very beautiful new-age nut job.

“You don’t believe me.”

Mike shoved his coffee cup aside. “No, I don’t believe you, and if you’ve finished wasting my time, I have real work to do.”

“Wait,” she said as he stood.

“I’m a busy man, Miss Baron.”

“What happened in the alley?”

Mike hesitated with his palms flat on the table. “Nothing.”

“Liar. You had a panic attack.”

“Fine. I had a panic attack. I work ninety hours a week on a good week. I don’t eat or sleep properly, and I see a lot of terrible things. Sometimes the stress gets to me, okay?”

“I did it.”

“Bull dust.”

“This would be so much easier if you just believed me, but I see I’m going to have to prove it.”

“Prove what?” A rush of pure erotic heat raced through Mike’s body and headed straight between his legs. He sat down with a thud as those same limbs turned into wet noodles.

She leaned further across the table. “It’s funny, isn’t it, how we accept some emotions as a normal part of our daily life? Fear, pain, worry, anger, anxiety, guilt? We put them down as a standard occurrence caused by traffic jams, a suspicious person in our peripheral vision, a horrendous story on the evening news. You know what I mean, all sorts of things. But, sexual excitement? Desire? Lust? Arousal? Those we can’t explain away quite so easily, can we, detective?”

Her voice was a husky edged blade running over his skin. Heat. His whole body was a mass of pulsing aroused heat. Mike fought the almost uncontrollable urge to jerk his hips forward and sink into soft firm flesh. I’m having sex. Jesus, I feel like I’m having sex. All of the sensations were there. A series of highly carnal scenarios ran though his mind like a movie. Supple limbs wrapping around his, warm silky skin rubbing against him, moist lips panting with hot breath, fanning his face. His erection pressed against his zipper, and even that was unreasonably erotic. Mike was lost in a sensual storm, held captive by luminous blue eyes. The pressure built in his lower back, culminating in a blast of sensation, a tightening of his groin. Christ, I’m going to come.

Meredith broke eye contact, relaxed back in her chair, and picked up her hot chocolate.

Mikes impending orgasm, and all the associated sensations, vanished. He slumped against the table, heaving in great lungful’s of air. “Jesus Christ!”

“Nope. Just me.”

He gaped at her, his fingers curled into claws against the solid wood, and heart beating in double time. “What are you?”

The look she gave him was a mixture of exasperation and annoyance. “I’m not a what. I’m an empath. What do you say? Are you willing to listen to me now?”

“Yes,” he said, through a clenched jaw.

“Good.” She slid a gilt edged business card toward him, before standing and hitching a leather bag on her shoulder. “My place at eight tonight, address is on the card. Be prepared to listen. Oh, and Stone, drink your coffee. You look like you need it.”

StoppedCold200x300♥ BOOK DESCRIPTION ♥
Things aren’t what they seem in peaceful Mistville, North Carolina. Margaret McWhorter enjoys a laid-back freshman year in high school flirting with Jimmy Willmore, swimming and hanging out with friends—until that day. Her brother, Sean, suffers a stroke from taking a steroid. Now he’s lying unconscious in a hospital. Margaret’s angry at her dad for pushing Sean to be a great quarterback, but a fire of hatred burns inside her to make the criminals pay.

Looking for justice, she takes Jimmy and her best friend, Emily, through a twisted, drug-filled sub-culture. A clue sends them deep into the woods behind the school where they overhear drug dealers discuss Sean.

Time and time again they walk a treacherous path and come face to face with danger. Even the cop on the case can’t stop them from investigating. All the while Margaret really wants to cure Sean, heal the hate inside, and open her heart to love.

EXCERPT:
I strolled to the other side of the car and got in. “Remember, if we see Joe, we don’t know him.”
“Got it.” Emily got in, backed out, and headed to the restaurant.

“I wasn’t going out, but Mom says Sean would want me to get back to a normal routine.” I choked up.

Driving the speed limit, thirty-five mph, Emily looked straight ahead. “Right now there’s nothing you can do for Sean. Your mom and dad are probably worried about you.

They don’t want you to put your entire life on hold. I think it would help them to see you have fun, even if it’s just a little.” She glanced over at me then right back to the road.

“You should try for their sakes.”

I’d heard bad times brought out true friends. Emily really cared about my family and me. “Okay, but Sean needs me. After all he’s done for me surely there’s something I can do.”

“For sure. As he recovers you can support him.”

If only he would get well.

Emily pulled into the parking lot in front of The Grill and cut the engine. Outside, the brick building appeared as sedate as a house with no one home. We opened the brown wood door into a crowded, busy room, live with chatter and soft rock playing in the background. Some co-eds gathered at tables in the middle of the floor. Others stood around the counter or in front of red booths packed with students.

My mouth gaped. Joe Garrett sat amid the high school crowd. Here already? He fit right in wearing his light blue polo shirt, his hair hanging below his ears. I re-directed my gaze away from him as Emily and I strolled by. A group of kids sitting in the booth behind him got up and left. Emily and I slipped into it.

Ray hurried over and took our orders, a chicken salad sandwich for Emily and a hamburger for me.

He returned with the food at the same time Jimmy Wilmore squeezed past the masses gathered in front of the cashier’s counter. My pulse pounded in my ears as Jimmy walked toward Emily and me. My mind went blank for fear he could see right through me with those piercing blue eyes
of his, even to my innermost thoughts, including how cute I thought he was. I nearly dropped my hamburger, but managed to hold it in mid-air while I looked down at the butcherblock table.

“Hi Margaret, I’m really sorry about Sean. I’m keeping him in my prayers.”

Excitement raced through my body as words failed me. Dare I look into his eyes? I focused on his lips. “Thanks.”

“Hi Jimmy, have a seat.” Emily sounded casual and friendly.

He sat beside me.

My heart thumped so hard I worried he heard it as he put his arm around the back of the seat and touched my shoulders.

“How’d your classes go today? I wanted to talk to you after English, but you got out before I had a chance.”

Thank goodness. Seeing him here was less stressful. I fidgeted with my paper cup then sat it down and tore tiny pieces off the napkin in my lap. “It wasn’t bad. Everyone was so good to me.”

“Well, they better be.” Jimmy’s voice sounded protective. My heart melted. I let my eyes meet his. They looked caring and sincere like those of a friend. I stopped tearing up the leftover napkin.

“So–what happened while I was gone?” I tried to sound laid-back.

“In class, the usual, homework, tests, same old stuff.” Jimmy shifted in his seat and moved his arm.

Had something unusual happened outside of class? Did he know anything about Winstrol V? That would be strange because Mike said he didn’t, and he played football. I wanted information so bad. “What about sports?”

Jimmy leaned back and wrinkled his brow. “Funny you would ask I’ve heard some athletes are taking steroids.”

I stopped breathing.

Emily’s eyes grew wide as she leaned across the table. “Really?”

Jimmy raised his blond eyebrows. “Yeah, a couple guys mentioned it after we played soccer.”

I took in air. My insides raced as if someone turned my nerves on high, but I had to stay calm. I needed answers. I didn’t know Jimmy played soccer. “Are the soccer players taking them?”

“You’re awfully interested. Do you two want to buff up?”

I gagged and couldn’t speak.

Emily gasped. “No. Of course not. We’re just curious, that’s all.”

Jimmy shrugged his shoulders. “I have no idea. I overheard the conversation, but I didn’t join it.”

I ripped the rest of the napkin into tiny bits. “Well think. Exactly what did you hear?”
