A Murdering Monster and a Myth Come to Life

After a police shootout where she killed a man, criminologist Maggie Tall Bear Sloan retires from the force to enjoy peace and quiet in rural California. When sets of young twins are murdered in her town, the local sheriff recruits her to solve the gruesome killings.

But to catch a killer, Maggie either accepts her true nature as a “pukkukwerek” —the shapeshifting monster killer of Yurok legend—or more children will die.

As the manhunt intensifies and her own family is threatened, Maggie will do whatever it takes to keep them safe. Whether she’s awake or asleep dreaming, Maggie is faced with a difficult choice: embrace her heritage—even if it means turning into myth itself—or deny that heritage and lose everything.

A Saint’s Salvation

Re-written an re-edited

Corporal Nicholas ‘Saint’ Santiago needs to go home to reclaim the man he used to be. To be the man he was before Operation Enduring Freedom slowly hardened his heart. He needs to reconnect to the values and the reasons he is doing what he does. Saint also needs to try to forget the courageous woman he knows was meant to be his.

Petty Officer Angelina Jones’ life changed the moment Saint saved her life. She survived the blast but now has to deal with the fact that she will never be whole. Knowing Saint received a ‘Dear John’ letter, Angel has no intention of being his rebound romance. She needs to be loved for herself. She needs to forget about the one man she knows was meant to be hers.

They each try to find someone to help them forget. But sometimes fate steps in to give what the heart desires most.

Excerpts:

Nick looked toward the fence line, rifle at the ready. Shots were firing sporadically around him. That’s when he saw it, the trail from a grenade launcher, unmistakable. Shit!

“Cover! Grenade incoming!” Nick shoved Doc, sending her sprawling over Perez and covering the both of them with his body. There was no time to run. “Fuck!”

The grenade went off. His ears rang, masking the sounds of the fire fight.

The dust settled and he sat up. His stomach turned. Numb, he froze, staring at the woman beneath him. He tried to draw in a breath but his lungs seized at what he saw. Nick would never forget the sight of all that blood. Her screams pierced his soul, tearing through the ringing in his ears.

“Doc!”

Her nails dug into his arm as his nickname whispered off her lips. It sent chills down his spine. She went boneless beneath him. Nick sucked in a breath, fearing the worst. He snapped into action grabbing Doc’s radio. “Medic! Doc’s down. Repeat, Jones is down.”

He could see his buddies firing, the rat a tat tat he knew.  The sight of muzzle fire, the jerk of M-4’s and M239 machine guns as shots were fired and brass flew attested to their determination to bring the enemy down. Nick ignore the shots around him and assessed the situation. His brothers in arms would show no mercy with two of their own lying injured.

****

She glanced down at her leg. All she could see was bandages. She could even wiggle her toes, all ten of them. Despite the fact that her foot was gone. When she shifted or tried to move the pain began and reality set in. Angel knew that soon Saint would be returning to duty. The healing wounds on his butt told her that.

“So, how about a game of Acey Ducey?” He was pulling over her hospital tray table as he reached down for his backgammon game. Saint was always ready to entertain her. He seemed to spend his every waking moment in her room. It was probably guilt. Angel could see it in his eyes when he thought she wasn’t looking at him.

Angel focused back on Saint. “Sure, why not?” She might as well enjoy his company while they were together.

After that? She would learn to live with her disability. Or not. Angel didn’t see much to look forward to. She had a daily visit from a shrink here and he was referring her to a psychiatrist back in San Diego. Evidently her attitude wasn’t what it should be. Imagine that.

EXCERPT

Colin wanted her to believe that he was truly happy for her. And he was. It was just … Better nae put too much into precise thought, lest he speak his mind.
“Regardless of my hopes, I may nae be able to return for some time,” he hedged, unable to admit even to himself how much he regretted leaving. If only she wasna to wed Brice. “Please, I beg you, grant me a kiss of peace to bless my travels?”
“Of course. When Brice and I are married, I’ll have the Strathnaver priest say masses for you every week, as well.”
“Thank you.” He stood, pulling her up with him.
She tilted her face, and he lowered his mouth to hers.
He intended only the lightest brush of lips, but she lifted herself onto her toes in the same moment, and her soft flesh yielded beneath the added pressure. She opened, and impulsively, he took the chance to taste her, to lick and savor her sweetness.
Her arms went around his neck, and she answered his advance with an artless passion that he wanted to believe came from her heart. She trembled against him. He embraced her, crushing her breasts to his chest. Her tongue’s small forays tantalized him. Desire raced in his heart, and his head swam. Could she love me? How could that be? He dinna know, but he would share this joy with her for as long as heaven allowed.
“Brother, release my betrothed.” Audible but slurred, the menacing whisper pricked his ears the way Brice’s blade stung Colin’s neck.

Beverly's Review

It all started when he couldn’t keep his mouth to himself. Asking for a kiss of peace led Colin to one of the biggest regrets of his life.

For Lady Sorcha is led to the destruction of her family and hatred for all things Marr. Her betrothed, drunken and jealous raised his hand to her. Her father, despising a man that would raise a hand to a woman he’d vowed to love and protect broke off the betrothal.

Colin ran, unknowing of the events he set into motion. Clans at war, and betrayal of all he held dear and just some of the elements that are woven through the fabric of Knight Protector.

I love a good historical romance and I thought this one was great! Delicious knights, secrets and intrigue kept me on the edge of my seat and reading. Rue weaves a tale of Medieval Highland Romance that will melt your heart.

AUTHOR BIO

Author of historical, contemporary and erotic romances, I fell in love with happily ever after the Author Logo - Rue Allynday I heard my first story. (Yes, I was a precocious little brat who read at the age of two, but I could hear much earlier than that.) I studied literature for far too many years before discovering that writing stories was much more fun than analyzing them. Heck, as an author, I get to read the story before anyone else. I am happily married to my sweetheart of many, many years. My husband and I share our home with our cat Junior, who condescends to allow me to feed him and clean his litter box. (Junior only tolerates my husband’s assistance when I am not available.) He occasionally permits me to pet him but demands my love and attention as his right (Junior, that is, not my husband. Although now that I think about it . . . . Let’s just leave that an ambiguouse conundrum for readers to ask me about when you meet me.) To continue, I am in awe of Junior’s feline ability to dominate with half a glance or a mere twitch of tail. Insatiably curious, an avid reader and traveler (me–not Junior).

I love to hear from readers about your favorite books and real life adventures. Crazy Cat stories are always welcome. You can send me your words of wisdom . . . Don’t shake your head at me; all words are wise in one context or another. You can trust me on this; I’m an author. As I was saying, you can send your words of wisdom, humor, and friendship to me at contact@RueAllyn.com. Can’t wait to hear from you.

Excerpt:

She turned around to face Trever. “I can’t leave Texas.”

“The fuck you can’t.” He now stood near the window, his back still to her. “You’re in danger here.”

“Don’t you think I realize that?” Her voice rose, which was better than giving in to the tears she wanted to shed. How had everything worked out like this? It was supposed to be a simple run to the store, then Anthony threw everything away and dragged her down with him.

“No, I don’t.” Trever turned back to look at her, his hand gesturing toward the door. “Otherwise you’d have been more careful. What the hell were you thinking, not even bothering to put the latch on the door? Are you hoping they catch you?”

“I…I…didn’t think…” she stammered, knowing she had messed up. If Trever had gotten in without her hearing a sound, anyone could have. Someone else could have been waiting for her when she exited the shower completely unaware.

“You’re right, you didn’t think, and you could have gotten yourself killed.”

He stood there unmoving as if she went through this type of shit all the time. She was out of her element and she knew it. It was why she’d called Brier.

“You’re the fucking SEAL, not me,” she spat. “It’s not like I run for my life every other day. I don’t know what the hell I’m doing!” She sank down onto the bed again and stared at the floor. “Maybe I shouldn’t have run. If I’d stayed I—”

“You’d be dead,” He finished for her. He came around the bed to stand in front of her. “A drug deal? Damn it, Allie, are you hooked on that shit?”

“What?” She looked at him, blinking as she tried to adjust to the sudden swing in the conversation.

“If you’re messed up on that shit I need to know. I can’t have you strung out. In order to get you out of here I need you with a clear head.”

“I thought you knew me better than that, Trever. I don’t do drugs.” Tired of her emotions pulling her in two different directions she forced herself to look away from him and let her gaze fall onto the duffel bag that held everything she now owned, which wasn’t much. “Just get out. I don’t need your help.”

“I think you do.”

“You left me…” The words were out before she could stop them. That simple statement was the root of the newest turmoil inside her and was the one reason she was rejecting his help, though she hadn’t meant to verbalize it. She didn’t want him to know that she still missed him.

“That’s not what this is about.”
