Thirst Blood of my Blood ~ RP Channing

Book Title - Thirst Blood of my BloodThirst by R P Channing Cover240+ Pages
WITH BEAUTIFUL PHOTOGRAPHS

~ Kira Sutherland ~

After a near fatal accident (and getting cheated on by her ‘boyfriend’), and beating up the lead cheerleader (with whom the boyfriend cheated…), and being labeled as having ‘issues’ in her school because she, uhm, sees ghosts, Kira is left with two choices:

  1. Continue her ‘therapy’ (where she’s told the ghost is a hallucination and also gets her legs ogled too often…)

Or

  1. Go to Starkfield Academy, a boarding school for “Crazies and Convicts” (as the social media sites call them.)

She chooses the latter…

~ Cory Rand ~

Cory Rand has not had an easy life. His mother died in a car accident when he was twelve, and so did his mother’s best friend…sort of. You see, Janice made a promise to take care of Cory just before she died, and so she lingers. Undead. A ghost that watches out for him.

Brought up in an abusive home, Cory quickly falls into a life of disreputable behavior. After his third offense (which was prompted by a girl, as usual – he has a weakness) he’s left with two choices:

  1. Be tried as an adult and share a cell with a guy named Bubba (he thinks…)

Or

  1. Go to Starkfield Academy, which Cory is pretty sure is run by vampires. But, hey, at least he’ll get an education.

He chooses the latter…

It’s at Starkfield that Kira meets Cory Rand, a boy with an insatiable Rage who sees ghosts, too. As well as other things, other things from his past, things that confuse him, things like fire and witches and demons.

Things he’s always ignored.

Until now.

PROLOGUE -1-

The Puppy Eyes

My life was perfect.

I had the perfect shoes and the perfect friends and I lived in the perfect house. My nails were perfect and my hair was perfect (except on Sundays, it was always windy on Sundays) and I had the perfect clothes. My lips were a perfect red and my hair perfectly straight. My eyeshadow was perfect, my hips were…okay, and my waist…well…also okay. Nothing was wrong in my life.

But then there was Jack.

Jack was a problem.

He needed to go. I mean, when you’re dead, you’re dead! I had told him this endlessly. Somehow, Jack didn’t get it. I mean, I felt sorry for the guy. Sure. Being stuck between this life and the next. But just because I found him, does that mean I needed to keep him?

I think not!

Sadly, when Jack got that look in his eyes, that weary, almost teary (if his tearducts worked) look, I melted. I just couldn’t send him away. Not even Jack knew where he would go after he died.

Would he, like, die? As in — dead, nada, kaput, finito, gone, no more? Bye bye, sayonara, ciao, hasta la vista baby and all that? I couldn’t have that on my conscience. No way.

I lay on my bed, wondering what to do about him. “Jaaaaaaack,” I hollered.

“Jaaaaaaack!”

Still no answer.

“Jack!”

Jack…materialized.

His eyes rolled down to the ground. He was making those puppy eyes again. “Jack, I told you not to do that. I told you not to play on my sympathies.”

His puppy eyes became worse.

His skin was gray and, well, dead.

“Oh, brother,” I said. “I have to do something about you. If mom finds out I have another ‘imaginary friend’ — at my age — well, I’d die of embarrassment. But, like, really die. Not like you.” I wondered about this. Would I die? Was Jack a freak accident, or did all people live on like him? Think of the cemeteries…

The idea excited me somewhat.

“What would you have me do, Miss Kira?”

“Knock off the Miss Kira crap. I told you it’s just Kira.”

“Yes, Miss Kira.”

The dead. There’s just no reasoning.

“Fine, Miss Kira it is then.” Rover barked like a lunatic in the garden. No one else might be able to see Jack, but I was sure my dog could.

“I have to do something about this,” I mumbled.

-2- The Rat

Mike knocked on the door before I had time to leave the house. Mike was the guy I thought (at the time) was perfect.

“Who is it?”

“It’s me, baby.”

Baby, urgh — I wasn’t his baby. I dated Mike because he was the quarterback, because girls are supposed to like the quarterback, because it’s just so darn perfect to be seen with the quarterback, like we’re brainwashed into thinking these things from the first romantic doll set mom buys us.

This was my previous life.

“Mike.”

“Uh-huh. Gonna let me in?” So you can try rub me up and then complain when I don’t let you? This, dear reader, was the big problem with Mike. The second we first kissed, his hand went way too far south for me to be comfortable — and I pulled back.

Mike suddenly wasn’t so perfect.

“Uhm, I was just on my way out,” I said.

“Kira? C’mon, open the door.” He sounded upset. “Is there someone in there with you?”

Boys. As if.

I didn’t know much about love (nothing, actually) but I knew this wasn’t it. “Uhm, now’s not the time, Mike.”

“C’mon, Kira, what’s going on?” He banged harder.

When in doubt…lie. I opened the door a crack. “There’s a dead rat in the house, Mike. Been here for days. I gotta go get some detergent and stuff to handle the stench.”

Mike stepped back. He peered through the crack of the door.

“It’s really bad,” I said.

“I’ll drive you.”

“I’m afraid the smell” — I stuck my armpit to my nose — “has found its way all over me. I’ll drive myself.”

“O — okay. Fine.” And then he grinned like he wanted something. “Later? My place?”

Urgh. “Uhm, sure…er…later. Not sure when though.”

“Six.”

I fought the urge to roll my eyes. According to girls at school, he was apparently so damn good looking — theoretically. But for me personally, he did nothing. Moved nothing. Twisted nothing. “Look, I gotta go, Mike. I gotta — ”

“Kira.” His eyes grew stern. “You’ve been avoiding me…”

Bingo! Well done contestant number one! And what have you won? A brain!

I tilted my head. “Mike, look, this…rat — I need to deal with it. We’ll talk later, okay? Bye.” I closed the door, not waiting for an answer, and peered out the peep hole. Mike hung around for a second, shoulders wide and eyes glaring straight at me through the door. Could he see me? Did he know I was looking at him?

He kicked something off the ground, and I had the distinct impression he mouthed the word Bitch before leaving. But I wasn’t sure…

-3- The Mack

“Roll down the window, Jack.” Jack was recently dead, so he still had a smell about him. (Which only I could smell…)

I had purposely skipped breakfast. Maybe Jack would help me lose weight. I was (still am) a little wide, although it had never stopped guys flirting with me. I know how to dress.

But I could be skinnier.

Lucy Rogers was skinny. All bones and no boobs.

Charlene Carverton was a babe. Cheerleader. Big chest (which she pushed out generously with a push-up — if only guys knew). Toned thighs. Charlene only dated college boys (back then), which I still think is pretty gross for a girl her age.

“He’s not for you,” Jack said out the blue.

“Hmm?”

“This…Mike — he’s wrong for you, Miss Kira.” For all Jack’s faults (mainly, being dead), he has a good heart. Factually, probably it’s why I kept him around at first.

“You think I don’t know that?”

“Then why don’t you dump him?”

I braked at a stop sign. Looked left and right. “Because I’d look like an idiot. I flirted with him and showed interest, and one kiss later I can’t stand the sight of him.”

“So dump him.”

“It’s not that simple. Kids at school — they can be vicious. I have to let it fade slowly. If I drop the bomb on him, I’ll never hear the end of it through senior year.”

“And you care?”

Yes, I did.

Forget Guantanamo, schools are rough. “You don’t understand, Jack. Maybe school was different in your day. But in mine, well, we walk through metal detectors.”

“Schools weren’t too different in my day.” I noted the sadness in his voice.

“You okay?”

“I’m dead.”

Right. “You miss…your life?”

Jack shrugged. “I like being with you, Miss Kira. And I don’t remember much of my life. I think I’m in limbo.”

“Limbo?”

“Yes, like I have some unfinished business. If only I could remember…what…it is…” He scratched his head.

“Any ideas?”

“Well, it can’t be love. If it were love, I’d be a vampire. That’s who teenage girls fall in love with these days.”

“A vampire? That’s just what I need — two undead beings stalking me.”

“I feel I have something to do around you, Miss Kira. I don’t know what, but something. Something important.”

I looked over at him. “Me?”

I was still looking at him when I missed the stop sign.

Staff Sergeant Liam McGregor doesn’t know what hit him. Sent home to recuperate from an IED blast, Liam is stuck in a wheelchair and is sentenced to surgery and physical therapy before he can walk again.

A physical therapist, Abby Worth has loved Liam McGregor since she first noticed boys. It’s too bad he’s her brother’s best friend. She has always been firmly put in the baby sister zone no matter how hard she tried to catch his eye.

Liam sees Abby and when she goes home with him doesn’t know how he can keep his hands off of her. She’s now old enough to touch and the fire in his blood and the combination of pain killers make him lose control. Abby can’t help but take what she’s always wanted.

Together they have to overcome their fear of being left behind to grab what they have always wanted-each other.

Excerpt

Liam heard a light footstep as his nostrils caught the scent of flowers. He ignored the sight and scent, keeping his head tilted back as he stared upward at nothing. It was probably another nurse. They came and went, their footsteps echoing down the corridor. Most didn’t smell as good as this one, though. She slowed as she spotted him and stopped in front of him. Liam couldn’t ignore the common courtesy that had been drilled into him since birth. He lowered his head and looked into familiar blue eyes.

“Liam?”

The gasp from her lips assured him that it was indeed Abby, little Abby Worth, all grown up. He had been best friends with her brother Hank since middle school when their family had settled down on the small spread they bought just outside of town. He stifled a groan as he ignored the familiar sensations she engendered in him since she first started filling out her bikini. He’d felt like a lecher at twenty-two when he first noticed her as more than his buddy’s little sister. Thank goodness he’d only been home on leave at the time.

“Baby girl? What are you doing here?”

“I was called for a job. I’m just here to get the information before heading out.” She looked at him, and he could see the worry in her eyes. She didn’t even call him on the nickname he knew she hated. “What happened to you, Liam? I never heard you were injured. I can’t believe Hank didn’t tell me.”

“I was in an IED blast. I’ve been in the hospital and now being sent home for recovery.” He shifted and couldn’t help the groan that escaped. He’d been an idiot to insist on sitting in the chair. His butt was numb and his bad leg, not that he really had a good one right now, throbbed with each beat of his heart. The unforgiving hard plastic just seemed to make it worse.

“Is that your wheel chair?” At his nod she gave him an exasperated look. “And I suppose you chose to sit on this poor excuse for a chair?” She shook her head at the rhetorical question. “Of course you did. Here, let me help you back into your wheel chair unless you can manage it yourself.”

“No.” Liam sighed. “I can’t. I could just wait for my dad to help me. I’m not sure you’d be able to lift me.”

He raised an eyebrow at her snort. She was busy checking his chair and locking the wheels. She was obviously familiar with the operation.

“I’m a physical therapist. Believe me, I’m stronger than I look.” Abby helped him up and into his chair, and Liam had a sinking feeling in his gut.

“What job did you say you were here for?” Liam hoped he was wrong. The thought of her hands on him made more than his head throb. He had no idea how he could hide his reaction to her if she was the one being assigned to the ranch.

“Don’t know yet. I had a message on my answering machine that I was needed. I came on down to check it out. Why?”

“No reason. Just curious I guess.” He settled back into his wheel chair with a sigh. Abby arranged his legs on the foot rest.

“How is this?”

She was all business as she checked his comfort level.

“Good.” Liam smiled at her. “Thank you, Abby.” She stood up and the scent of flowers that he had first noticed tightened his groin. At least that part of his body was working despite the fact that he didn’t want it to react around Abby. Not that it had ever listened to him around her. Her age and the strength of his reaction to her was another reason he was glad he had enlisted in the Marines. If it was one sided, that would have been different, but he could see her response to him even if she didn’t know what it was. Liam had to protect her even if it was from himself. If he had been living at home, Liam was afraid of what could have happened.

“You’re welcome, Liam. If you need anything just call. My parents can always reach me.”

She leaned over and gave him a short hug. He couldn’t help but notice the softness of her arms and breasts as they pressed against him. She quickly stood and turned away. He swore he saw a light blush stain her cheeks as she waved and quickly stepped down the corridor. He swallowed. The feel of her against him had sent his temperature soaring. He was glad she left so quickly. The tenting of his sweatpants made it obvious what her touch did to him. He was damn glad she was oblivious.

* * * *

Abby escaped down the corridor, her footsteps squeaking on the faded tiles. The admin offices were in the oldest section of the building. Harsh lighting and faded posters lined the walls. The money went to updated equipment to help the soldiers that were wounded, not sprucing up the offices that housed the tons of paperwork the VA required.

Abby never expected to see Liam here. She’d had a crush on him since she first started noticing boys. Her body started developing and her hormones went haywire. He’d been the one she’d compared all her boyfriends to, and they’d come up lacking. From the electricity that seemed to spark when she touched him, she knew she wasn’t over him. It was obvious to her he didn’t feel the same way. He never had. His nickname for her, baby girl, said it all.

Abby entered the office, glad she had put on a bra today. Her nipples throbbed from the feel of Liam’s chest when she hugged him. The air blasting in the office made it even worse. The scheduler for the department was going through menopause and threatened to kill anyone that changed the thermostat. No one was willing to test her. A former Marine, Peg was still intimidating.

“Hey, Peg. What assignment do you have for me?”

“Abby.” She smiled, waving her to a chair. “A Marine. He’s still enlisted but needs therapy. He broke an arm and both legs and is still recovering from being thrown from an explosion. Had to have surgery on one leg and his arm. He’s being allowed to do therapy at home as long as we can find a live in therapist. You know we’re full up right now. We have been since this damn war started. He’s well enough to go home, but not fit enough to return to active duty. The board decided to have the outreach program fill the gap.”

Abby nodded. The hospital and the foster care center always seemed to be full. Different faces, but always full of injured soldiers, sailors, air men and Marines.

“Makes sense. Is he too far from the center to do therapy from here?”

“Yes and no. There’s really no one to bring him in daily, and he needs daily therapy. He lives far enough out that taking someone from the ranch would be a hardship for them. Not to mention the bouncing around on the roads would just undo all the good from each session. So, a live in is recommended for now until he improves.”

“I had wondered. How is his attitude toward therapy?”

“He’s on board with it. He wants to get better. It’s just not fast enough, so don’t let him rush it. I guarantee that he’ll try.” Peg laughed. “He’s a typical Marine.”

Abby got a sinking feeling in her stomach. She had a feeling she knew exactly who she would be working with.

“What is his name?”

“McGregor.”

Abby closed her eyes briefly and sighed.

“Liam.” She swallowed. “When do I start?”

The White Iris ~ Susanne Matthews

The White Iris_optThe White Iris is the third book and final book in the Harvester Series. While all three books can be read and enjoyed on their own, reading the three books in order will add to your reading enjoyment.

Book One, The White Carnation, begins the hunt for a serial killer kidnapping pregnant women, murdering them, and then vanishing with the newborn infants. But there is much more to the crime than the detectives on the case can possibly imagine.

Book Two, The White Lily, continues the hunt, but the Harvester is angry, determined to reclaim what he sees as his, not caring how many have to die for him to achieve his goal.

About The White Iris

Time’s running out for Special Agent Trevor Clark and his FBI task force. They’re no closer to uncovering the identity of the Prophet, a dangerous serial killer who has been murdering new mothers and vanishing with their infants. If Trevor can’t unlock the clues, the killer’s threats to unleash what the FBI suspects is biological warfare could mean death for all of them. His only recourse is to swallow his pride and reach out to his former fiancée, the CDC’s renowned virologist, Dr. Julie Swift.

Two years ago, Julie ended their engagement after Trevor abandoned her when she needed him most. Now, faced with the possibility of the greatest epidemic since the Spanish flu, she has to put her faith and her safety, as well as that of countless others, into the hands of a man she doesn’t trust. Can they set aside their differences to stop the Prophet, and in doing so, will they find the love they lost?

From the streets of Boston to the wilds of Alaska, this thrilling conclusion to the Harvester Series takes several turns you won’t see coming!

Sensuality Level: Sensual

Excerpt from The White Iris:

“Ellie, I’m telling you, there are two virus samples missing,” Julie whispered into her phone. “I came down here to secure a new specimen, and they’re gone. I checked the sign-out sheet. No one’s working with them. They should be here.”

“Be reasonable, Jules, there’s absolutely no way two virus samples can walk out of the CDC, and you know it, especially since we got that terrorist alert from the FBI two weeks ago. It would be easier to carry a gold ingot out of Fort Knox. It wouldn’t be the first time someone skipped protocol because they were in a hurry. Hell, we’ve both done it. It’s probably one of your own team members. Look, I’ll be back within the hour, and Brad should be back by then, too. If you feel this strongly about it, take it to him. Someone needs their knuckles rapped. I’ll back you up.”

“But I can’t go to him,” Julie wailed. “I’m logged in here under your name.”

“My name?” Ellie yelled loudly enough that Julie pulled the phone away from her ear. “Why on earth are you logged in under my name? How is that even possible?”

“When you left my office to go to the dentist, you grabbed my badge instead of yours. They were side by side on my desk. I didn’t realize it until that Ebola specimen arrived, and I had to sign for it. I couldn’t just leave it lying around. I expected to be in and out without a problem. This is what happens when I act on impulse.”

“Breathe, Julie. Exactly what’s missing?”

“Two influenza A samples: an H1N1 derivative, not the one the team and I used for this year’s vaccine, and an H5N1. I have a bad feeling about this.”

“For Pete’s sake, settle down. The FBI directive was a heads-up, not an imminent threat warning. Brad’s been like a cat on a hot tin roof for the last couple of weeks, ever since you two met with Trevor. What the hell did he tell you?

“Nothing that has any bearing on this,” Julie said, hoping Ellie couldn’t hear the lie in her voice. “You’re right. I’m making a mountain out of a molehill.”

“Not you. If there’s one thing you don’t do, it’s jump to conclusions, so if this scares you, I’ll tell Brad I found them missing. Take a picture, and I’ll show it to him. Good enough?”

Julie sighed. “Yes, thanks. See you in an hour or so.”

Using the camera on her cell phone, Julie took a picture of the two empty slots, making sure the photograph was clear enough to see the sample numbers. Three days ago, there’d been a power outage in this part of the city. The authorities had blamed it on one of the many suicidal squirrels responsible for such things each year, and from what she’d learned, Georgia had more of the idiotic rodents than a lot of other states.

What if it hadn’t been a squirrel, but a carefully organized theft? She couldn’t get Trevor’s prophet out of her head. The two missing flu viruses were among the most dangerous because they killed healthy people, not just the sick and infirm like most flu viruses did. Delivering them might be a problem since both were spread by direct contact, but if the man was determined to kill millions, releasing either one of these pathogens would do the trick.

Chapter 1
The dark, somber sky matches Gracelynn Calhoun’s disposition. Her heart beats rapidly in her chest as she grips the steering wheel of her Hyundai Accent. From her windshield, she notices the barren trees that once held her favorite fall foliage. Looking at them makes her feel just as empty as the trees in the Layton Hills Cemetery. She releases her right hand from the steering wheel, and clutches her angel necklace as tears pour down her cheeks. She closes her eyes, continuing to hold the necklace, remembering the day her beloved gave it to her. She lets go of her necklace, opens her green-grey eyes and wipes her cheeks.

While walking to her beloved’s tomb, leaves crinkle under her favorite pair of black, high-heeled shoes. As she reaches the stone, tears trickle down her face and she drops to her knees. She immediately starts cleaning around his grave, removing all debris.

She stares at the gravestone, and drags her fingers over the intricately carved angel wings. She reads aloud, even though she doesn’t need to. “Angelo Grant Calhoun. 11/28/1980 – 11/30/2012. “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.” More tears stream down her face.

She reaches up and touches the top of the stone, resting her hand in the middle of the stone, like she’d be touching Angelo’s heart. “I miss you so much, Angelo. How can I move on with my life…move on without you?” she cries to the gravestone. “I love you so much. I wore your favorite dress and shoes, hoping that you’d see me today. How crazy is that?” She laughs through tears, wipes her cheeks with her hand and grabs her necklace. “I still remember the day you gave me this,” she expresses to the gravestone. “How can I move on when you were my whole life?……”

Excerpt

“Wow. You’re a vision, you know that?” He practically drools all over. She wears a pair of blue jeans and a low cut green sweater with a white scarf wrapped around her neck. Her hair is up, and she wears light make up.

She chuckles. “Like what you see?” She smirks at him, daunting him. The little vixen can come out and play when she wants and he is enjoying this side of the sexy Gracelynn.

He decides to play dirty himself. “Want to see how happy I am to see you?” He smirks back at her. “Let’s make a wager, shall we?” he asks competitively.

She grins at him. She intently twirls a strand of her hair that she left down by her face between her fingers, licks her lips and stares at him. She looks him up and down, making him even more drawn to her.

He gulps. The damn vixen knows how to play dirty.

“Well, what is the wager? Because if it is staring at each other all night, I could do that and then some.”

Excerpt:

“Follow you home?” he asked, calculating in his mind how long it would take before he could get her in bed.

“I have a better idea.”

“What?”

“I can’t wait to go home to make love. Let’s go parking.”

Carson swallowed around the lump in his throat. “Parking? That’s for kids. We haven’t gone parking since…”

She chucked him under his chin. “I know. Since high school. But, surprise, I want to go parking.” She tugged on his earlobe. “Fumble in the dark. Sex in the back seat. Steam up the windows.”

Grabbing her hand, he headed for the parking lot. His cock pulsed to the beat of his pounding heart. If this was her idea of how to begin their Surprise Me week, then they were off to a good start. “Whose vehicle?”

About the Author:

From the time she was a teenager, Anita would sneak her mother’s romances and read them until all hours of the night. She never thought about creating one herself, but fell into it with a few friends. On an over-long road trip, they started talking about their favorite authors and why they like their books. To kill time, they started making up their own characters and plot.

From that point on, Anita had story ideas and characters filling her head. Finally, to shut them up, (or so she thought), she started writing them down, surprised at how erotic her characters turned out to be.

Now, in between being a pharmacist, taking care of her two cats, and spending time with her family and friends, she writes. Her stories are about love and romance on the edge.

Her first book, South Seas Seduction, an erotica with The Wild Rose Press, was released in March of this year.

11cropeditAbout the Author

A.D. Ellis spends the majority of her days loving and wrangling two school-aged children, a husband, and a Yorkie with a stubborn streak a mile wide before heading to the inner city of Indiana to teach a challenging group of alternative education students in grades third through sixth. Most days she hits the gym after school in hopes of running and lifting away the stress and headaches of the day before picking up her children and squeezing a whole day’s worth of loving and living into the too-short hours before bed. It’s no wonder Ms. Ellis lives for the slower, easier days she gets to enjoy on breaks from school.

Growing up in a small farming town in southern Indiana, A.D. is grateful to her mother for passing along the love of reading. With her nose constantly stuck in a book, Ms. Ellis became accustomed to friends and acquaintances snickering and shaking their heads at her love of reading.

A.D. never dreamed of being anything but a teacher, although there are certain times of the year when she laments her career choice. Ms. Ellis had a story idea floating in her head for about a year. After persistent prodding from a friend, A.D. put pen to paper and began writing her first story in October 2013. From that moment on, she was hooked. Taking the people and stories from her head and sharing them with readers is a scary, exhausting, rewarding, and fulfilling experience which A.D. plans to continue until there are no more stories banging around in her mind.

Excerpt

I manage to make only a couple of steps when Ryan catches me around the elbow and turns me to face him. I don’t even have time to react when he crushes me to him, lifts my face to his, and kisses me hard.

Ryan kisses me like he’s never kissed me before. With desperation, as if he’d die if he stops. His lips and tongue are demanding, hungry, almost bruising. It’s not the tentative, reclaiming kiss I expected us to have after so many months apart. No. This is a devouring, claiming, and merciless kiss. It’s an I-hate-seeing-other-men-touch-you, why-are-you-fighting-us, every-second-without-you-is-torture kiss.

Feeling fire running through my veins, I bring my hands up to cup his jaw and kiss him back with everything I am. Even if I’m not ready to admit it, being without Ryan has been an insufferable anguish for me too. No matter how hard I try to deny it, my heart still wants him with every beat it takes.

I don’t even care that we’re making a scene when my hands roam over his hard body, grabbing and squeezing.

When our lips finally part, we stare at each other, his breaths as labored as my own. I swallow. Neither of us moves as tension zings between us.

Shit, what have I done?

In a poor attempt at protecting my heart, I take a step away from Ryan and murmur, “You shouldn’t have done that.”

His jaw clenches and his eyes fill with a rush of remorse.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t … God, I’m such a fucking asshole. I’m really sorry.”

No, I didn’t mean that. I want you to do it again. No. I don’t.

God, I’m a mess.

“It’s okay. I mean … I did kiss you back. I…” My stammering will cost me.

His expression suddenly relaxes and a bit of a triumph flashes in his eyes. “You did.”

He cups my cheek, his thumb tracing the line of my jaw. “Let me chase away all your fears about us. Let me kiss all the scars I left on your heart.”

He’s so earnest in his plea.

“Ryan …” I whisper, feeling the walls I’ve built to protect myself crack with his every word. And his expression. God, I’m drowning in the depths of the emotions pouring out of his green eyes.

“Being apart from you, thinking I’d never hold you like this again has been hell.”

Holy, sweet Lord. What is he doing to me?

Radiating agony streams from him. “Never again I’ll make a choice for you or demean your opinion. I promise to always respect your wishes and your freedom to make decisions for yourself. No matter how strong my feelings for you are, it doesn’t give me the right to decide for you.” He pauses and gathers a deep breath. “It took me a long time to realize we have nothing without trust. I know that now. I’ll never make the same mistake again, Liz. Let me make good on every broken promise. Let me dry every precious tear you shed for me.”

He leans down, his lips hovering over mine, and whispers across my mouth. “Elizabeth, please, forgive me.”

His plea wraps around my heart and squeezes, taking my breath away. I push back the tears.

God, I dreamed about this moment for so long. Now it’s here, and I’m stunned and lost.

Before I can form a coherent thought, his lips are on mine again. This kiss is different. It’s loving and slow and begs for forgiveness. And it ends too soon.

“I know your friends are waiting for you. Call me when you’re ready for me to be in your life again. I’ll be waiting. No matter how long it takes.”

Wait. What?

My emotions choke me as I watch Ryan walk down the hall and away from me. He disappears from view, leaving me in such a state that I can hardly string two cohesive thoughts together.

Who does that? Who leaves like that? Asshole.

He was right to leave. His presence, his kisses and touches make me defenseless. I promised myself not to be so easily dazzled again, yet here I am trembling with lips swollen from his kisses. My heart thuds uncontrollably in my chest, and the urge to run after him chokes me.

I draw in a deep, steadying breath.

There are two options here. I can ask him to leave my life for good or take a leap of faith and try to make this work between us.

What do I do?
