Cara’s Review ~ Fairy Dust

Fairy DustFairy Dust
by Carol Shenold

Half fae/half witch, Ande Ryan’s deepest desires are simple: a stress-free, fun evening with a nice guy, to earn the respect of her peers in the Paranormal Investigation Unit, and at long last, learn to use her Goddess given fae magic.

Instead, she fights a demon, gets mugged by a pixie, meets her soul mate and oh yeah, has to try and defeat a wizard with the help of a six-foot elf and a wolf—Cal Masterson.

Cal had no idea that his first encounter with Ande Ryan would include a fight with a demon or an intense attraction to the red-haired fairy who displays as much courage and determination as any wolf in his pack. Will Cal overcome his need to protect her as they both fight the odds and allow her fulfill her destiny?

Cara’s Review:
Could you find new love and save the world in less than sixty pages? Ande Ryan did, and surprisingly, she did it well. As the book states it is part of a series, we shall learn more about this (slightly inept) magic wielding fairy. Ande is a teeny tiny bit of a woman- half Witch and half Fae. I always love the hybrids- they are either hated or revered, have stunning powers or are a bit lacking in control of the powers. Ande is part of the Paranormal Investigation Unit- the “brush under the rug” unit, in charge of catching out of control pixies and the like. In one afternoon, she finds out someone wants the Titania Amulet her father left behind, and is attacked by murderous flowers, ghouls, trolls, and an angry pixie tribe.

Way to lead up to a blind date, right? Cal, a shifter, happened to come across the fight between Ande and the ghoul, and they are both surprised at the restaurant afterwards. At least that makes an interesting blind date icebreaker!

Finally, we find out how evil politicians really can be, as we follow Ande, Cal, and friends on a quick journey to save the world. I really liked the characters of this book, and can’t wait to learn more about all of them. Though short, this novella managed to pack a successful punch – not often done in short stories.

Bottom line: You will hopefully be as entranced as I am at a world where magic exists, but people happily ignore it. Ande has a powerful full name, and lives up to it! She is a butt-kicker, and I can’t wait to see what future hijinks she manages to find herself in. Would recommend this book as a quick action fantasy read.

Wicked Wild Wednesday ~ Silk and Scandal ~ Cassandra Dean ~ Interview

Beverly and Tamara: Cassandra, welcome to SSLY. Thanks so much for joining us today! So first, why don’t you tell us a little about yourself.

Thanks so much for having me, Beverly and Tamara!
Hi all! I’m Cassandra Dean and I write historical romance ranging from sweet to steamy. I also play about in the eras, roaming from Ancient Rome to Victorian to the Old West and beyond. My books take readers on an emotional rollercoaster, from the lowest of lows to the joyous of highs. And, of course, my characters fall into the forever kind of love.
I’m from Adelaide, South Australia (yep, Down Under), have an unhealthy obsession with Camper shoes and cameras, and am CANNOT WAIT until Game of Thrones returns to our screens.

Tamara: What do you HAVE to have when you are writing?

My brain helps. If it’s switched into gear and not daydreaming about Nathan Fillion, things usually go much better 😉
Apart from that, not much. I’m very aware that writing is a profession, like any other, and as such you need to be prepared to do it anywhere.

Beverly: When did you start to write?

When I first learnt how to hold a pen! Seriously, I’ve always made up stories, so once I learnt how to record my stories on a page, I’ve never looked back!

Tamara: What do you think are the qualities that make up a “hero”?

A hero, in story terms, is someone who has something to learn, a need to be filled. Thus, you can tell who the hero is of each story by observing who has the most to learn.
Thus, each hero and heroine in a romance must be lacking something and through the process of the story, they learn and grow and the lack is filled. In a romance, the thing lacking is a person to love, and that person must compliment the other perfectly. They don’t have to be perfect themselves – in fact, it makes for a pretty boring story if they are perfect – but their flaws combine into an awesome Voltron-like being.
Voltron. Mmm. Sexy.

Beverly: Can you describe your favorite character? And which of your books is he/she in? How do you come up with your characters?

Oh man, I love all my characters! However, I think Elizabeth and Malvern from TEACH ME are my favorites. That story was such a joy to write, and I enjoyed the time I spent with them immensely.

Tamara: What are the hardest scenes for you to write? Suspense? Sex? Dialogue? And why?

I find action scenes hard to write. They just doesn’t seem to flow naturally from my pen. However, I’ve worked hard to try and make any action scene I do write dynamic and interesting. I’ve taken a leaf out of the writing team of the TV show Angel’s book and referred to Stephen S. DeKnight. That guy writes KILLER action scenes. Seriously, have you seen Spartacus? Awesome Sauce!

Beverly: What writer, if any, influenced how you write?

Joss Whedon. Def. LOVE him, love his work, love his advice. The man is a legend.
Loretta Chase. She’s so effortlessly humourous, and then turns on a dime to absolutely decimate your heart.
Lucy Clark. My F4E and my critique partner. Without her support and advice, I would not be published today.

Tamara: Who would you choose as your “book boyfriend”? From what book? Author?

Inigo Montoya, from The Princess Bride (book) by William Goldman, just so I can introduce him to people – “Hello. This is Inigo Montoya. You killed his father? Prepare to die.”

Beverly: LOL! Love it! What is the kinkiest thing you’ve ever done? Or would like to? What? We are all about the love!

I crimped my hair once. That was pretty kinky 😉

Tamara: What are your favorite types of heroines? Do you like the damsel in distress who needs saving or the kick-ass variety? Why?

I love well written, strong characters, no matter their ‘type’. A damsel in distress can be super cool, if she’s written well. A heroine who kicks butt and takes name can be equally awesome, again if she’s written well. As long as the characters are three-dimensional, which goals, motivations and conflicts that make sense for that character, I love them all.
That being said, I do like characters who save themselves. Others might help them realize they need saving, but ultimately it’s a decision they make and execute.
The Calvary always arrives late for a reason.

Beverly: What was your worst date ever?

2 Januray 1992. That was pretty horrendous 😉

Tamara: If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you want to have with you? (you have food, water, shelter, all the necessities, so nothing mundane)

MacGyver.
A stick of gum.
A Cessna162 Skycatcher twin-engine aircraft with a pilot and a pitcher of cocktails to make the flight smoother.

Beverly: What is your “guilty pleasure”?

Potato Gems and cocktail frankfurts (In the US, I think they’re called tater tots and, um, I’ve no idea!). So, so bad but so, so delicious.

Beverly: Cocktail weenies. @.@ Frankfurts sounds so much better!

Tamara: What dream or goal have you yet to realize?

I would REALLY like to see a book I wrote on a bookshelf. I’m predominantly ebook published, and while I have one book in print, it’s not in wide enough distribution to have reached the bookshops in dear old Adelaide. One day, though!

Beverly: What was you most embarrassing moment?

I have a horrible feeling it’s still to come…

Tamara: *snorts with laughter* If you were a color what would you be and why?

Yellow-orange, like a sunset. It’s such a beautiful time of day, what they call “Magic Hour” on film sets. You always get the best photos at that time of day.

Beverly: Who has influenced how you perceive love? Why?

The world in general. We see love on display every day, as was so ably demonstrated by the movie Love Actually. Richard Curtis came up with that whole idea while at the arrivals terminal of an airport. How people choose to display their affection, from the tiniest to the grandest of gestures, influences me every day.

Tamara and Beverly: Okay. We are SSLY so we have to ask. Who loves you?

My mum!

Now for some quick fun questions:
Boxers or briefs?
Both have their place. Oh yes. *drooooooooool*
Coffee or Tea?
Coffee mostly, although a good cup of tea never goes astray. In fact, I might have one now…
Tall, dark and handsome or Blond and buff?
Tall, dark and handsome, def.
Hairy chest or smooth?
Both have their place, much like boxers and briefs 😉
Chocolate or Vanilla?
Chocolate, yum!
Kinky or Sweet?
Both. I know, such a fence sitter.
Fast or slow?
It depends. Am I driving a red car? Cos red cars always go faster…I don’t think they have a slow setting

Book Tour ~ Captured Lies

Captured Lies Tour
Captured Lies

By Maggie Thom

Publication Date- October 17th, 2012

Captured LiesBlurb-
She was kidnapped not once but twice and now someone wants her dead because of it….

Her life was a lie!

Bailey knew her upbringing wasn’t normal but she’s worked hard to stabilize her life. At 29, she finally has a good business, a stable home; her life is miles from that of her childhood. Then suddenly her mother dies, leaving a gaping hole and a discovery that they may not even be related. If Guy, the private investigator is to be believed, her life is a lie. Using the skills she learned on the streets, Bailey travels back through a sketchy and dangerous past, to find answers. Dodging bullets, staying ahead of those who want her dead and convincing Guy she can do it alone, are making it difficult to discover not only the secrets of her mother’s past but that of a family claiming she is theirs.

Everyone seems to have a story… but who’s telling the truth? And who wants her dead? Is Guy part of the solution? Or part of the problem? To discover the facts, she’ll have to untangle a web of deceit, lies, and secrets, dating back over thirty years.

Excerpt:

Turning, she faced him. “Yeah. Like where we lived. I learned to connect where we were at, to a date. It gave me something to do. It kept me from thinking about what was going on in my life.” She twisted her hands together. “Every time we moved. Every time we screwed someone

over. Every time we did something that made my stomach feel like it was full of battery acid, I can tell you the date. Ask me to remember when something good happened and I… don’t know. Sad eh?”

“It had to be tough being on the go all the time.” Guy restrained himself from reaching out to touch her, knowing she needed to keep talking and any sympathy on his part would shut her up.

“You have no idea. But at some point it became an expectation. You never really unpack. Never get too excited. Too attached. Because it will all change.” She knocked her knuckles together. “Okay, enough about me. Tell me something about you. Did you move around a lot?”

He couldn’t look away from her questioning gaze. He shifted several times in his seat.

“Ants in the pants? Guess I hit a nerve. Easy to talk about me but don’t share with the pathetic life story of the girl if you can’t beat it. Hhmm?”

“No, I probably can’t beat your story but mine’s not so pretty either. Let’s just say I was the result of a bad situation.”

He ignored her arched eyebrow for a moment before giving in. “My mother was a maid for a wealthy family, she was said to have been raped. It was hushed up. She was given the boot. Until I was nine I lived with my mother and grandmother. Then my mom was killed in a car accident. My grandmother was a bit nuts and devious. She was blackmailing the rich family, telling lies and slandering them. She wanted money. My step grandmother, who had become the head of the mansion, basically bought me. She paid the old woman and next thing I knew was that I got to grow up in a beautiful old monstrosity of a house, where I was treated like gold.”

“So your real grandmother didn’t want you and figured you were a good way to get rich? How long did you live with her?”

“A few days.”

“Your step grandmother put up money right away for you, even though you weren’t related?”

“Uh. No.”

“Okay, I’m confused.”

He met her compelling gaze. He’d never told anyone about his upbringing before. “The day after my mom died, my real grandmother put me in the foster care system. It took my step grandmother over a year to find me and to stop the old bat from screwing with my life.”

Embarrassing Crushes
By Susan Mallery

Here’s the link to a video in which Susan chats about Ford Hendrix of THREE LITTLE WORDS: 

Susan Mallery three-little-words-webWhen I was younger, I had a deep and abiding love for a celebrity who shall remain nameless. I wasn’t the kind of girl to hang his picture in my locker or cover my room with his posters – ours was a private love. I grew up in LA, and my dad worked in TV, so I was convinced that my one true love and I would one day meet. And when we did, I didn’t want him to think that I was like the millions of silly girls who had a crush on him. They didn’t know him. I did. My love was real, and as soon as we met, he would recognize me as his soulmate.

Back then, I didn’t tell anyone how I felt because our love was sacred. Today, I still won’t confess his name because, frankly, I’m embarrassed. What was I thinking?! He wasn’t very smart, only marginally cute, and he ran like a girl. (There’s your one hint – he was on a TV show that required running. And he had dark hair. Two hints, but that’s it.)

In THREE LITTLE WORDS, my latest Fool’s Gold romance, Isabel Beebe knows all about embarrassing crushes, though hers wasn’t on a celebrity. When Isabel was 14, she had a crush on Ford Hendrix, her sister’s then-fiancé. Worse, Ford knew how she felt because when her sister broke up with him, Isabel chased after him, sobbing, begging him not to leave. And when he joined the Navy, she wrote him dozens of long, impassioned letters.

Over the years, her letters became less like teenage love letters and more like a “Dear Diary” kind of thing, but that brings its own special twist of humiliation. Because now Ford is back in Fool’s Gold to open a bodyguard-training facility, and this dangerously sexy ex-Navy SEAL knows all her most embarrassing secrets. He knows about her first kiss. He knows when she lost her virginity and where (*cough* inthebackofatruck *cough*).

All summer, Isabel has been ducking around corners to hide from Ford, but as THREE LITTLE WORDS begins, she’s decided that enough is enough. Fool’s Gold is too small for her to avoid him forever, especially since he just rented the place next door.

Enter the THREE LITTLE WORDS blog tour contest once a day every day from July 30 through August 11 for a chance to win a $25 Amazon or BN.com gift card! And because this blog was set up by Fool’s Gold Cheerleader Allyson Brann, if you win, she’ll win a gift card, too!

Book Tour ~ Interview ~ Giveaway ~ L.M. Preston ~ Thundering Luv

1004742_492476054156002_2049212623_n
Beverly and Tamara: Welcome to SSLY. Thanks so much for joining us today. So first why don’t you tell us a little about yourself?

I love writing, it’s like my daily mental vacation and I enjoy my day gig as an Engineering Manager. As a mom of four kids I’m super busy, but I believe I’m one of those people that enjoy it and am a bit hyper. I grew up in the city of Washington DC but have an obsession for traveling to beaches.

Tamara: What do you HAVE to have when you are writing?

Coffee, music, noise.

Beverly: When did you start to write?

Early in the morning and just before I go to bed at night. It’s a great release for me after running around all day.

Tamara: What do you think are the qualities that make up a “hero”?

Someone who is flawed, but willing to try, caring, and put others before themselves.

Beverly: Can you describe your favorite character? And which of your books is he/she in? How do you come up with your characters?

My favorite is probably Colin from Thundering Luv, mainly because I fall in love with all my new characters and he is the kind of boyfriend I would’ve wanted when I grew up.

Tamara: What are the hardest scenes for you to write? Suspense? Sex? Dialogue? And why?

Suspense is really difficult for me. I write like I think – fast. Suspense requires build up and I usually find that I have to add that portion to a manuscript after I’ve completed the first draft.

Beverly: What writer, if any, influenced how you write?

Jack Campbell or aka Jim Hemry, Author of Dauntless, my husband and I would read his books in the car. A friend of mine introduced him to me and he gave me some great encouraging words.

Tamara: Who would you choose as your “book boyfriend/girlfriend”? From what book? Author?

I’d have to say I totally would’ve picked Jacob from Twilight.

Beverly: *fist pump* Team Jacob! Yeah! What is the kinkiest thing you’ve ever done? Or would like to? What? We are all about the love!

Make out on the beach before dawn.

Tamara: What are your favorite types of heroines? Do you like the damsel in distress who needs saving or the kick-ass variety? Why?

The kind that demands attention but doesn’t realize it. Who gives her guy a good run for his money without being brash.

Beverly: What was your worst date ever?

A blind date where my friend set me up with a human octopus that had seriously bad acne.

Tamara: If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you want to have with you? (you have food, water, shelter, all the necessities, so nothing mundane)

Chocolate, The Rock Dwayne Johnson, and a really good book.

Beverly: What is your “guilty pleasure”?

Writing travel trip reports and sharing them with friends on how to travel with four kids on a shoestring budget.

Tamara: What dream or goals have you yet to realize?

I’m still waiting to ride on a hot air balloon.

Beverly: What was your most embarrassing moment? It can’t be worse than mine….

Coming out the bathroom with toilet paper in the back of my pants on my first date with a hot guy.

Tamara: LOL! Yup, that would do it! If you were a color what would you be and why?

Green. I’d have vibrance but still be mellow.

Beverly: Who has influenced how you perceive love? Why?

Every romance book I’ve read. Before then, I really didn’t understand the love in relationships since my parents were never married. Then I met my husband and he taught me to really enjoy loving and being loved.

Tamara and Beverly: Okay. We are SSLY so we have to ask. Who loves you?

My guy, Shawn, who I met when I was 15yrs old, then dumped a few months later only to see again in my early twenties and to date for a total of four months before marrying. We’ve been married now for twenty years. He’s totally hot!

Now for some quick fun questions:

Boxers or briefs? Boxers
Coffee or Tea? Coffee
Tall, dark and handsome or Blond and buff? Both! I’m greedy.
Hairy chest or smooth? Both!
Chocolate or Vanilla? Both!
Kinky or Sweet? Kinky (but don’t let that get out)
Fast or slow? Slow
Public or private? Both!
Top or bottom? Both!

Thundering Luv

Jewel has always been able to get the guy she wanted. The starting jock on the football team, the team captain on the basketball team, and the lead swimmer on the swim team. Problem is, she didn’t find them the least bit exciting. Was she cold or a she-wolf for guys? Colin thought so, and he’d do anything to bring her down a peg or two. When these two collide on the sandy beach during their mixed up summer vacation, sparks fly, making this a summer neither will forget.

Excerpt #1

“I mean, how does your mom do it? Most ladies can’t even find a guy to marry them – my mom is still ‘dating’ my dad and can’t get him to commit. But your mom,” Amy inhaled loudly, “she’s like…hum, like a husband whisperer or something,” Amy laughed.

Jewel lifted her shades to peek out at Amy, “So are you saying guys and dogs are the same?” she jumped up and plopped down on Amy’s butt to tickle Amy’s feet, “You calling my mom a dog trainer,” she giggled.

Whack! The volleyball hit Jewel on the forehead with such force, she fell backwards. Jewel’s foot hit’s Meg’s drink and red juice splattered all over her white bikini. Amy’s butt went upward to knock Jewel onto the hard deck. Falling back, Jewel’s head hit the wood floor knocking her shades off.

Jewel tried to catch her breath. Pain and anger became one as she blinked against the glare of the sun. Her eyes meet the dark brown ones of a laughing boy standing above her. A gorgeous guy, but who cared, he’d hit her so hard with his dumb ball, she was seeing stars.

“You! You! Stupid, don’t you know how to hit a ball?” Jewel struggled to get up, and pushed the boys tanned hand away from her. His unruly long black hair, dark eyes, and full lips cocked up in a smirk made her angrier.

“I’m trying to help you,” his baritone voice sounded like he was fighting against laughter, and he grasped her hand. His firm muscular shaped arm flexed as he bent to help her.

Jewel slapped it away, “I don’t want your help you ruined my bathing suit and,” she touched her forehead where a small lump was forming, “put a knot on my head!” She pushed at him and stood up, grabbing the volleyball off the ground. His yummy face taunted her when his eyebrow went up questioning her motive. Then she aimed the ball at his head and missed.

He ducked, “What was that for?” His laughing eyes turned stormy.

Waving her hand at him, she stepped forward. “Idiots that hit girls with their,” Jewel slipped back, and tried to get her balance, but the last thing she remembered was him smirking at her as her head hit the floor again.

Excerpt (2): Jewel

Jewel sighed watching her phone ring for the tenth time in the last hour. She kicked the cell phone off her beach chair and bit her nail. The sea. The beautiful sea in front of her couldn’t evoke any depth within her heart. Maybe what they called her at school was true. Maybe she was made of ice. Couldn’t feel, couldn’t love, was only a pretty face with nothing in between. The large beach home which shared a wraparound deck, and a middle wall with a neighbor had seen better days. It was perfect, a temporary escape from all the drama at home.

“You should just answer the thing. Stop stringing him along,” her cousin Megs teased, and tapped Jewel’s dark tan leg with her pale foot.

“Easy for you to say, you don’t have a boyfriend who’s scrumptious, head of the football team, everything a girl should want. But he doesn’t ‘do’ it for you.” Jewel rolled her eyes and huffed, plopping back in her beach chair. She tied her dirty blond hair in a knot, a clash to her darker hued skin tone which made most people wonder if she’d dyed her hair.

“Nobody ever does it for you,” Megs busted out laughing, “What is he, like boyfriend number five this year? And girl, you’ve been known to make the big guys cry. What do you do with them?” her platinum blond hair appearing to glow in the sun.

Excerpt (3): Jewel

Jewel pictured Matt, muscular frame, thick shoulders, all the makings of a star quarterback, topped with curly red hair. Crap, he was gorgeous. What was she thinking, maybe she shouldn’t end it? “Uh…,”

“You’re scaring me. Talk to me, you know I love you like crazy. When you don’t answer my calls I’m thinking you don’t love me anymore,” Matt sounded almost whiny and she hated when they did that. Whined, cried, and made her feel like a she-witch.

“Well I’ve been busy. You know with the girls and we got here today. And since you … know I’ll be gone all summer maybe we should um take a break?” Jewel cleared her throat, feeling like scum. She should really be a pro at this, but she hated it, especially doing it where she had to hear or see her next victim. And she didn’t want to hurt them, she knew they’d be better off with someone who could really fall in love with them. Not someone like her, someone broken. Some of the guys she’d broken up with would cry, other’s had tried to physically hurt her. She’d learned her lesson and tried to break up in as distant a way as possible. But ending this with Matt now on the phone couldn’t be helped.

“No. I don’t want a vacation from you. I love you. I was thinking about driving up there today. Me and the guys could rent a place nearby. My dad said he’d foot the bill, and since him and my mother split he’ll do anything for me. He even brought me a new convertible, your sexy gold hair would feel good slapping against my face while I drive.” He cleared his throat, “And you’ll be able to ditch your cousin and stay with me – alone.”

Jewel slapped her forehead. Why couldn’t Matt take a hint. “But I, no I don’t think that’s a good idea. My mom barely let me come with Megs and Amy, because she’s so protective and if she knew I was meeting my boyfriend here she’d think you…and I were you know…,” she cleared her throat. Not only that, but being alone with Matt made her feel extremely uncomfortable. The last time they were alone at her house when he popped over unannounced, he’d almost ripped off her shirt fighting her while they kissed in her living room. He’d tried to force her blouse up, and she fighting him to put it down. If Megs hadn’t come over earlier than planned, Jewel didn’t know what would’ve happened. It was then Jewel decided to break it off with Matt.

“Say it? C’mon tell me you love me back and I’ll wait to come up. I kinda feel like, Jewel, I really miss you. And you never tell me you love me back. Yeah, you kiss me, tell me how great a person I am, and things other people don’t even notice about me, but you never seem to … give me part of yourself.” Matt cleared his voice, like he was about to continue.

“It’s because…well, I don’t … I’m not in love with you the way you want me to be. And I’m sorry Matt, I really am, but we need to break up. I can’t do this to you anymore,” Jewel felt like a lowlife. Again and again, she couldn’t give up hope that she’d find someone, somebody out there that her heart connected too. She’d thought it was Matt, felt a little flutter in her tummy when they’d first met, but it died the next day, and by then he’d pressured her to be his girlfriend. And after that, he like all her other ex-boyfriends started to turn scary.

Cara’s Review
Here’s everything I love in a book: Post-Apocalyptical, paranormal beings, magic, mystery, and of course, romance. Add to that soul-sucking beasts, zombies, and missing persons and you get one heck of a story.

This is a great, great, great read! I would strongly recommend it to lovers of paranormal. There are hot love scenes, that aren’t necessarily erotica. With a great cast of secondary characters, Fiona Moon and Ian Barroes light up this novel, as the two kick ass main characters. Fiona is one of those hard ass heroines, with emotional walls five miles high, with a bit of a soft mushy inside; she fights hard for the underdog, and seems to always win. Ian is a necromancer who is super sexy, and with five years of emotion and attraction boiling between them, it was bound to explode- and oh, it did.

I absolutely hope that there are more books in the future with these characters, as I love them, and this post-apocalyptical world is fascinating. Even more so because the cataclysm that ended society as we know it is completely and totally possible, and frankly, from my understanding, will likely occur one day (I’m talking in couple of million years). I look forward to reading more from this author.

So, why not a 5 star rating? Well, there were lots of silly editing errors. No big deal to some readers, a huge deal to others. Consider this your heads up- but I would seriously recommend reading it anyway. The story is totally worth a couple of reading missteps when you stumble over a sentence.

Interview ~ Liberty Blake

Beverly and Tamara: Welcome to SSLY. Thanks so much for joining us today Liberty. So first why don’t you tell us a little about yourself.

First of all I have to compliment you both on your names! When I was in High School I had a great friend I worked with. She was also my movie buddy. Beverly was a great deal of fun, so whenever I see the name I get a warm feeling of friendship.
Tamara is the heroine of my next novel, The Misplaced Bride. She is sassy and strong.
When I saw your names on the interview I felt like this was kismet!
Now a little about myself. I have wanted to be a writer all my life. I have five children and five grandchildren. I am a late bloomer. I began college at the same time daughter number two started in her college, daughter number three began high school, and daughter number four started kindergarten.
I studied history with the intent of authoring historical novels, only to realize that I am a research junkie. Let me at the research materials and I will never stop. So I decided that contemporary was the place for me.

Tamara: Definitely meant to be then! What do you HAVE to have when you are writing?

I’d like to say peace and quiet, but that is a pipe dream. I like having my laptop, but a lot of scenes end up being jotted down in my ever present Moleskin notebook (like the one Hemingway always used) or my pretty teenie-bopper journal.
The only real requirement I have is that I have to have something to support my back, my legs have to be up and comfortable, and I have a sweet little Brookstone lap desk. I purchased the lap desk when I was in New York City with a friend and there wasn’t enough desk space for both of us. Now the pellets in the base are all flattened out and I have to supplement the height with a pillow, but I’m weird and it works.
It sounds like I do all my writing in bed, and that is where I am the most comfortable, but occasionally I like to work at the library, Barnes & Noble café, or Paneras.

Beverly: When did you start to write?

I think I began as a rewriter. I always rewrote my bedtime stories. I was never happy with the endings, so I had to fix them. On my ninth birthday my grandmother gave me a sweet, little, powder blue, portable, Smith Carona typewriter. I had informed her that the toy typewriter I had to share with my siblings was good enough for them, but not for a serious writer like me. I needed to have the proper tools of my trade, like Lois Lane.

Tamara: What do you think are the qualities that make up a “hero”?

An ability to change his views, beliefs, way of like, whatever to accommodate the heroine.
Fidelity, honestly, the willingness to sacrifice, the willingness to get his hands dirty, the willingness to help. He doesn’t have to start out with these qualities, but he has to pick them up somewhere along the way.

Beverly: Can you describe your favorite character? And which of your books is he/she in? How do you come up with your characters?

So far Cassidy Flynn is my favorite character. She had a hard life, but she built a new life with friends and a good support system. She has a good heart and is not afraid to help others. She also swings a mean bat.

Tamara: *grins* What are the hardest scenes for you to write? Suspense? Sex? Dialogue? And why?

Dialogue is difficult for me. I’m a Chatty Cathy and I am always afraid that I keep a dialogue going for too long or that I fill it with extraneous details. Also, that whole “keep them moving” thing, I always have to remind myself that they are not having a discussion over tea.

Beverly: What writer, if any, influenced how you write?

Every writer I have ever read!

Tamara: Who would you choose as your “book boyfriend”? From what book? Author?

I am a very fickle woman. I have so many book boyfriends. There is Mr. Darcy from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, but there is also Mark Darcy from Bridget Jones’s Diary, Lord Damerel from Georgette Heyer’s Venetia, Brant Mallam from Hannah Howell’s If He’s Tempted, Kyrian and Zarek from Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunters, and Adam from Patricia Briggs Mercy Thompson series. The list could go on, but I am already breathless just thinking about these book heroes.

Beverly: LOL! A different one for every night of the week! Not a bad plan! What is the kinkiest thing you’ve ever done? Or would like to? What? We are all about the love!

I can give you references, but unfortunately my children are literate and it is still within the statute of limitations in some states, so I must decline to answer this on the grounds it might cause my children extreme embarrassment.

Tamara: What are your favorite types of heroines? Do you like the damsel in distress who needs saving or the kick-ass variety? Why?

I have nothing against damsels that need to be saved. We’ve all been there and there is no shame in needing help. I just don’t like the whiny damsels that wring their hands or do stupid things, especially after they’ve been told to stay put by the experts.
But if I have my druthers (isn’t that an excellent word, druthers?) give me the kick-ass variety. She doesn’t have to do it all, but she doesn’t just sit on her tuffet waiting for Prince Charming to show up and kiss her all better.

Beverly: What was your worst date ever?

The one where I had to throw the car into reverse and jump out and run.

Tamara: Tell us more! No? You sure? If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you want to have with you? (you have food, water, shelter, all the necessities, so nothing mundane).

Men. Books. I think I just covered all my needs.

Beverly: What is your “guilty pleasure”?

Reading.

Tamara: What dream or goal have you yet to realize?

Going to Australia.

Beverly: Me too. Road trip? Er, water trip! What was your most embarrassing moment?

When I was in the fourth grade I had to wear my dance costume from the year before to perform a dance for my classmates. I had had a growth spurt and I had to constantly pull the costume up over my nipples. (I was too young and skinny to have breasts, just nipples.) The nip slips at such a tender age explains a lot about my character now.

Tamara: LOL! If you were a color what would you be and why?

Orange. It’s the color of sunsets, the tango, and the brightest color in the crayon box. (Hailstones and Halibut Bones by Mary O’Neill

Beverly: Who has influenced how you perceive love? Why?

My grandmother. She took care of those she loved, and she taught me to do the same thing.

Tamara and Beverly: Okay. We are SSLY so we have to ask. Who loves you?

My children.

Now for some quick fun questions:
